Lyons is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Present day Prior to gazettal on 7 July 2004, the area comprising Lyons was part of the suburb of Lee Point, Northern Territory. Lyons is a new suburb with new estates being built to the west. History Lyons is named in commemoration of Tommy Imabulg Lyons, a traditional owner (Greater Darwin Area) and senior man for the Danggalaba clan of the Larrakia people, who was a member of the "Black Watch" and worked as a police tracker. Darwin ( ; Larrakia: ) is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. Cox Peninsula
__NOTOC__ The Wagait Shire is a local government area in the Northern Territory of Australia. The council was established as the Cox Peninsula Community Government Council on 28 April 1995 and renamed with effect from 1 July 2008. The shire is located west of Darwin, as a 15-minute ferry ride, or a drive on fully sealed roads. The council derived its previous name from the Cox Peninsula. It was named after Matthew Dillon Cox who was regarded as the Northern Territory's first pastoralist, who applied for a lease over the peninsula in 1869, just after the establishment of Darwin. The current name is derived from the name of the township located near Wagait Beach. Tracking in hunting and ecology is the science and art of observing animal tracks and other signs, with the goal of gaining understanding of the landscape and the animal being tracked (the "quarry"). A further goal of tracking is the deeper understanding of the systems and patterns that make up the environment surrounding and incorporating the tracker. The practice of tracking may focus on, but is not limited to, the patterns and systems of the local animal life and ecology. Trackers must be able to recognize and follow animals through their tracks, signs, and trails, also known as spoor. Larrakia People
The Larrakia people are a group of Aboriginal Australian people in and around Darwin in the Northern Territory. The Larrakia, who refer to themselves as "Saltwater People", had a vibrant traditional society based on a close relationship with the sea and trade with neighbouring groups such as the Tiwi, Wadjiginy and Djerimanga. Leanyer, Northern Territory
Leanyer is a northern suburb of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History The name Leanyer was in general use for the area at the time of development and first appeared on 1869 survey plans. Leanyer is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word. During World War II Leanyer was established as a military area, there was an Army post and a military equipment storage facility, gun turrets were also set up along the coast of Lee Point. It was disbanded soon after the end of World War II and residential development of Leanyer started during the 1970s. The roads and streets within the suburb are named after coastal features and rivers in the northern part of the Northern Territory. The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. Tiwi is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The suburb is bounded by Trower Road, Henbury Avenue and a coastal strip, separating Casuarina Beach and Lee Point Beach. It is in the Local Government Area of City of Darwin. It is home to Dripstone Middle School. History The suburb was partly built before Cyclone Tracy struck in December 1974. Tiwi is named after the Aboriginal people from the Tiwi Islands.
