Lynn Singer
Roselyn "Lynn" Brod Singer (born March 13, 1925, in Manhattan – died November 30, 2005) was an American activist for the rights of Soviet Jewry refuseniks, 'refuseniks'. As the leader of the Long Island Committee for Soviet Jewry and a member of the board of the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews, she brought the issue of Jews trapped in the Soviet Union to international attention through a series of political actions, including sit-ins at the United Nations and the Soviet compound in Glen Cove, New York, Glen Cove, as well as protests and marches. Born to Harry Brod and Sarah "Sally" Kandel Brod, both of them New York born Jews, Lynn married Murray Singer in New York in 1948, and was initially a housewife living in Queens, and then Long Island, raising two children, before becoming more and more involved in community activism and civil rights. Refusenik (russian: отказник, otkaznik, ; alternatively spelt refusnik) was an unofficial term for individuals—typically, but not exclusively, Soviet Jews—who were denied permission to emigrate, primarily to Israel, by the authorities of the Soviet Union and other countries of the Eastern bloc. The term ''refusenik'' is derived from the "refusal" handed down to a prospective emigrant from the Soviet authorities. In addition to the Jews, broader categories included: *Other ethnicities, such as Volga Germans attempting to leave for Germany, Armenians wanting to join their diaspora, and Greeks forcibly removed by Stalin from Crimea and other southern lands to Siberia. *Members of persecuted religious groups, such as the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, Baptists and other Protestant groups, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Russian Mennonites. Ida Yakovlevna Nudel ( he, אידה נודל; russian: Ида Яковлевна Нудель) (27 April 1931 – 14 September 2021) was a Soviet-born Israeli refusenik and activist. She was known as the "Guardian Angel" for her efforts to help the "Prisoner of Zion, Prisoners of Zion" in the Soviet Union.
