Lyman B. Sperry
Lyman Beecher Sperry (1841-1923) was a physician, lecturer, and author. Nicknamed "The Gentleman Explorer", he was the discoverer of Sperry Glacier in Glacier National Park in Montana, and was influential in the park's promotion to national park status. Career Sperry taught at Oberlin College in Ohio and Carleton College in Minnesota. A medical doctor, he wrote multiple books on marriage and health. He also traveled the country giving lectures at colleges and YMCA facilities on "Sanitary Science", an early form of public health. His strong public speaking and persuasion skills likely played a role in his lobbying efforts for Glacier's National Park status. Exploration of Glacier National Park Sperry arrived in what is now Glacier National Park in 1895, planning to explore the area and purchase land as an investment. Sherman, New York
Sherman is a town in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. It is an interior town in the county, west of Chautauqua Lake. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 1,618. The town contains the village of Sherman. History The area was first settled around 1823. The town of Sherman was formed in 1824 from the town of Mina. The source of the town's name is Roger Sherman, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.36%, is water. The Southern Tier Expressway ( Interstate 86 and New York State Highway 17) passes across the north part of the town. Access is from Exit 6 on the south side of Sherman village. Avalanche Lake (Flathead County, Montana)
Avalanche Lake is located in Glacier National Park, in the U. S. state of Montana. Avalanche Lake is southwest of Bearhat Mountain and receives meltwater from Sperry Glacier. Avalanche Lake is a hike from the trailhead along the Trail of the Cedars. When measured in August 1910, the maximum depth of the lake was 63 feet near the upper end. History Avalanche Lake was named in 1895 by a party including Dr. Lyman Sperry, namesake of the Sperry Glacier, who witnessed many avalanches during their stay. Nature Though most lakes of similar size and elevation in Glacier National Park do not have fish, Avalanche Lake is a popular fishing location among anglers.
