Lykes Brothers Inc, is a corporation founded by the Lykes Family of Tampa, Florida, in 1910. This family would become the largest landowners in Florida, the ninth largest landowners in the United States and the wealthiest in Tampa Bay. In the 1870s Dr. Howell Tyson Lykes abandoned a medical career in Columbia, South Carolina and took over a family cattle ranch in rural Hernando County north of Tampa. The Lykes Family started the first school in this county in Spring Hill, Florida and the library at the county seat, Brooksville, Florida also bears the Lykes name. Spring Hill refers to the community that grew up around the Lykes Family home called Spring Hill, which is distinct and separate from the later development by the Deltona Corporation by the same name. Park Tower (formerly known as the Lykes Building) is a skyscraper located in downtown Tampa, Florida. It is Tampa's first high-rise tower. Muse, previously misspelled on federal maps as Muce, is an unincorporated community in Glades County, Florida, United States. The spelling of Muse was officially corrected on federal maps on April 11, 2019. History Muse, originally spelled "Meuse," was owned and homesteaded by John Browning, Will Ballard, Dallas Douglas, Mr. Wills, Mr. Thompson, Jim and John Dese, Cornelius Poole, Crisp, F.W. Steamship Co., also called Lykes Lines, was a cargo shipping company acting from the beginning of the 20th century to 2005 having its main business in the trade to and from the United States. History In 1898 the sons of Dr. Howell Tyson Lykes started a shipping business on the Gulf Coast of Florida. They used a 109-foot, 75 ton three-masted schooner to ship cattle to Cuba as a replacement for herds which were wiped out in the Spanish–American War. The tradition of naming their ships after family members dates back to that time, when this schooner was named ''Doctor Lykes'' after their father.
