Lya Luft
Lya Fett Luft (15 September 1938 – 30 December 2021) was a Brazilian writer and a prolific translator, working mostly in the English-Portuguese and the German-Portuguese language combinations. Life and career Lya Fett was born on 15 September 1938 in Santa Cruz do Sul (Rio Grande do Sul) which was largely settled by German language, German-speaking immigrants, beginning in the first half of the 19th century. A notable percentage of the population there speak both German and Portuguese language, Portuguese, including Fett's family. She later moved to Porto Alegre, where she lived until her death. She was a college professor of linguistics and literature, and wrote an opinion column for ''Veja (magazine), Veja'' magazine. Luft's literary work has been translated into other European languages, including German, English and Italian. Death Lya Luft suffered a heart attack in 2019. Lya Mara (born Aleksandra Gudowicz; 1 August 1897 – 1 March 1960) was a Polish actress. She was one of the biggest stars of the German silent cinema. Biography Lya Mara was born Aleksandra Gudowicz in a Polish family in Riga, Governorate of Livonia. As a young girl she wanted to become a chemist, as then famous Maria Skłodowska-Curie. Just before World War I, in 1913 Lya Mara moved with her family to Warsaw, as Poland and Latvia were part of the Russian Empire. There, she began her career as a dancer. Lya W. Stern (born 1950) is a violinist, recording artist and violin teacher. Born Lya Weiss to a Jewish family in Cluj, Romania, Stern moved to the United States as a teenager. She is married to Larry Stern and has two children. Education Stern completed post graduate studies in the violin at University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, and has a Master's Degree with Honors, Violin Performance from the University University of Southern California and a Bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. Stern was a resident, artist and teacher in New York City and Los Angeles. She currently lives in Washington, D.C. where she chairs the ASTA Certificate Advancement Program.
