Praia da Luz (, changing to before a following vowel), officially Luz, is a civil parish of the municipality of Lagos, in Algarve region, Portugal. The population of the civil parish in 2011 was 3,545, in an area of 21.78 km². Also known as ''Santorini de Portugal'', ''Luz de Lagos'' or ''Vila da Luz'' (a contraction of its former official name, ''Vila da Nossa Senhora da Luz''), "Praia da Luz" (which means ''Beach of the Light'') is used to refer to both the urbanized village and the beach. The parish had its origins in a small fishing village (the industry is now only found in isolated enclaves to the west), but was transformed by several holiday-villa complexes into a tourist area. The Algarve (, , ; from ) is the southernmost NUTS II region of continental Portugal. 1755 Lisbon Earthquake
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, also known as the Great Lisbon earthquake, impacted Portugal, the Iberian Peninsula, and Northwest Africa on the morning of Saturday, 1 November, Feast of All Saints, at around 09:40 local time. In combination with subsequent fires and a tsunami, the earthquake almost completely destroyed Lisbon and adjoining areas. Seismologists estimate the Lisbon earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 or greater on the moment magnitude scale, with its epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean about west-southwest of Cape St. Vincent and about southwest of Lisbon. Chronologically, it was the third known large scale earthquake to hit the city (following those of 1321 and 1531). Almádena
Almádena () is a village located in Portugal's western Algarve. Administratively, it is part of the civil parish (freguesia) of Luz, (popularly known as Praia da Luz), and the municipality (município) of Lagos. Etymology According to certain authorities, the toponym 'Almádena' has an Arabic origin, like many place names in the area. The name is assumed to derive from the Arabic word for minaret (al-madin). Geography The village is located in the Vale de Barão. It lies 3 km north of the fishing village of Burgau and 4 km from Luz itself, just outside of the boundary of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Almádena's location is on the edge of fertile sedimentary deposits including the 'ribeiras' of Almádena, of Burgau and of the Vale de Barão. Vila Do Bispo Municipality
Vila do Bispo () is a municipality (''concelho'') in the Portuguese Algarve. It has 5,717 inhabitants in an area of 179.06 km2. History The first references to this region referred to the ''Aldeia do Bispo'' in the 14th century, in a charter dated 27 March 1329, and later, in 1353, a royal charter that promulgated the addition of the ''"locality that is called Bispo, which is in the Cape of Saint Vincent..."'', into the bishopric and domain/jurisdiction of Silves Municipality.
