Luxembourgish Red Lion
{{More citations needed, date=May 2022 Luxembourgish Red Lion ( lb, Lëtzeburger Ro'de Lé'w) or LRL was one of the most famous Luxembourgish Resistance groups during World War II. It was founded in October 1941 in Hautcharage and was active during World War II especially in the south, west and centre of the country. In March 1944, the LRL became one of the founders of the Union of Freedom organizations or ''Unio'n''. The main activities of the LRL were to hide people from the German police and to bring them safely to France. The LRL also distributed patriotic flyers to encourage the Luxembourgish population to continue resistance against the Germans. German Occupation Of Luxembourg In World War II
The German occupation of Luxembourg in World War II began in May 1940 after the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was invaded by Nazi Germany. Although Luxembourg was officially neutral, it was situated at a strategic point at the end of the French Maginot Line. On 10 May 1940, the German ''Wehrmacht'' invaded Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Luxembourg was initially placed under a military administration, but later became a civilly administrated territory and finally was annexed directly into Germany. The Germans believed Luxembourg to be a Germanic state, and attempted to suppress what they perceived as alien French language and cultural influences. Although some Luxembourgers joined the resistance or collaborated with the Germans, both constituted a minority of the population. Hautcharage
Hautcharage (; , ) is a small town in the commune of Käerjeng, in south-western Luxembourg. Geography Neighbouring towns include Clemency, Fingig, Hivange, Schouweiler, Bascharage and Linger. The small river Mierbaach, which rises at the Boufferdenger Muer, flows through Hautcharage. History The church in Hautcharage was built in the 18th century in Baroque style. Sport Hautcharage used to be home to a football club, Jeunesse Hautcharage, which won the Luxembourg Cup in 1971. As a result, Hautcharage qualified for the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup; in the first round, Hautcharage drew Chelsea, and lost 21-0 on aggregate, which remains a European record defeat. The Unio'n vun de Fräiheetsorganisatiounen or just Unio'n (''Union of Freedom Organisations'') was an organisation of members of the Luxembourgish Resistance which was founded in World War II. It emerged in March 1944 from the merger of the Luxembourgish Patriot League, the Luxembourgish People's Legion, the Luxembourgish Red Lion and other resistance movements, shortly before the end of the war in Luxembourg. In September 1944 the Luxembourgish Freedom Union also joined. A bunker is a defensive military fortification designed to protect people and valued materials from falling bombs, artillery, or other attacks. Bunkers are almost always underground, in contrast to blockhouses which are mostly above ground.
