The Luxembourg Athletics Federation (french: Fédération Luxembourgeoise d’Athlétisme), abbreviated to FLA, is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Luxembourg. Athletics (sport)
Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most common types of sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes' performances for a team score, such as cross country. Organized athletics are traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC. Unlike in most countries in Europe, sports in Luxembourg are not concentrated upon a particular national sport, but encompasses a number of sports, both team and individual. Despite the lack of a central sporting focus, over 100,000 people in Luxembourg, which has a total population of only 610,000, are licensed members of one sports federation or another. Individual sports Athletics There are many athletics clubs in Luxembourg representing most of the country's main towns. The largest club is CAL Spora Luxembourg, with a membership of 400 members. At an organisational level, the same clubs are often affiliated to both the Luxembourg Athletics Federation (FLA) and the Luxembourg Triathlon Federation, the governing bodies for athletics and triathlon, respectively. Alex Bodry (born 3 October 1958) is a politician from Luxembourg. Life and career Born 3 October 1958 in Dudelange, Bodry lived there since childhood. Coming from a family of socialist tradition (his grandfather Jean Fohrmann, was Member of Parliament and Mayor, union activist, member of the High authority of the ESCS and resistant fighter and his aunt Marthe Bigelbach-Fohrmann, was a socialist Member of Parliament from 1974 to 1979), he entered the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party at the age of 15. Norbert Haupert
Norbert Haupert (born 2 April 1940, in Schifflange) is a retired Luxembourgish athlete and currently a politician, sitting in the Chamber of Deputies for the Christian Social People's Party. Like Josy Barthel before him, Haupert spanned the divide between sport and politics by heading the Luxembourg Athletics Federation and the Luxembourgian Olympic and Sporting Committee. As an athlete, he ran middle distance, dominating Luxembourgian middle distance running in the early 1960s and twice doubling up to win both the 800 metres and 1500 metres at the Luxembourgian national championships. He also won the bronze medal at the 800 metres at the 1963 World Student Games.
