Luton Town F.C., Luton Town Football Club is an English association football, football club, founded in 1885. After becoming the first professional team in the south of England in 1891, Luton joined The Football League in 1897 before leaving three years later. The club rejoined the League in 1920, and reached its top division in 1955–56 in English football, 1955–56. After losing the 1959 FA Cup Final 2–1 to Nottingham Forest F.C., Nottingham Forest, a period of decline saw Luton in the Football League Fourth Division, Fourth Division by 1965. After a swift revival the club was back in Division Two by 1970. Luton earned another promotion and relegation, promotion four years later, returning to Football League First Division, Division One for the 1974–75 in English football, 1974–75 season, in which Luton were promotion and relegation, relegated back to the Second Division. Luton () is a town and unitary authority with Borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status, in Bedfordshire, England. At the 2011 census, the Luton urban area#United Kingdom, built-up area subdivision had a population of 211,228 and Luton/Dunstable urban area, its built-up area, including the adjacent towns of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had a population of 258,018.
