Lutherville Light Rail Stop
Lutherville station is a Baltimore Light Rail station located in Lutherville, Maryland. Like most suburban stations on the system, it has two side platforms serving the line's two tracks. It opened in 1992 as part of the initial operating segment. History The Northern Central Railway stopped at Lutherville until local services ceased around 1959. The former station building is still extant. Prior to the opening of the light rail system, the current parking lot was a park-and-ride lot with express bus service. In July 2009, two teenage boys were struck by a light rail train near Lutherville station. The boys were likely unaware of single-tracking, which caused a train to come from the opposite direction than they would have expected. Two operators were fired and six other employees disciplined in December 2009, but it remained unclear whether the deaths could have been prevented by the operators following proper procedures. Lutherville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 6,504. Prior to 2010 the area was part of the Lutherville-Timonium CDP. Within its borders lies the Lutherville Historic District. Geography Lutherville is located at (39.4240, −76.6177). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP had a total area of , all land. The town is located north of Baltimore City along York Road (Maryland Route 45). It is bordered on the north by Timonium, on the west by Interstate 83, on the south by Towson, and on the east by the Hampton neighborhood. Northern Central Railway
The Northern Central Railway (NCRY) was a Class I Railroad connecting Baltimore, Maryland with Sunbury, Pennsylvania, along the Susquehanna River. Completed in 1858, the line came under the control of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) in 1861, when the PRR acquired a controlling interest in the Northern Central's stock to compete with the rival Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O). For eleven decades the Northern Central operated as a subsidiary of the PRR until much of its Maryland trackage was washed out by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, after which most of its operations ceased as the Penn Central declined to repair sections. It is now a fallen flag railway, having come under the control of the later Penn Central (merger of the PRR and the New York Central), Conrail, and then broken apart and disestablished.
