Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Offaly Junior A Hurling Championship
The Offaly Junior A Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The national media covers the competition. History The junior championship dates back to 1907. It was the second hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was originally seen as a second tier championship for teams that were too weak for the senior hurling championships. Kinnitty defeated Kilcormac–Killoughey in the 2020 championship decider, played in the summer of 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games. Format The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at O'Connor Park in late autumn. John Troy (hurler)
John Troy (born 19 January 1971) is an Irish retired hurler who played for club side Lusmagh and at inter-county level with the Offaly senior hurling team. Career Born in Lusmagh, County Offaly, Troy first came to prominence as goalkeeper with the Offaly minor team that won All-Ireland Minor Championship titles in 1986, 1987 and 1989. He later won back-to-back Leinster Under-21 Championships with the under-21 team, having already joined his brother Jim Troy on the senior team. Troy collected his first silverware with the team in 1990 when Offaly won the Leinster Championship before claiming the National League title the following year. He won a second provincial title in 1994 before ending the season as an All-Ireland Championship-winner after a defeat of Limerick in the final. Jim Troy (hurler)
James Troy (born 11 April 1960) is an Irish retired hurler who played for club side Lusmagh and at inter-county level with the Offaly senior hurling team. Career Born in Lusmagh, County Offaly, Troy first came to prominence during a two-year spell as goalkeeper with the Offaly minor team. After a period with the under-21 side, he joined the Offaly senior team as understudy to Damien Martin during the 1981-82 National League. Troy claimed his first silverware in 1984 when Offaly won the Leinster Championship. He took over as first-choice goalkeeper the following year and ended the season as an All-Ireland Championship-winner after a defeat of Galway in the final. Troy won a further three provincial titles between 1988 and 1990, the last of which saw him captain the team as a result of Lusmagh's County Championship success the previous year. Joachim Kelly
Joachim Kelly (born 2 December 1955) is an Irish hurling manager and former player. He is manager of the Offaly senior hurling team. Kelly played for club side Lusmagh and was a member of the Offaly senior hurling team for 19 seasons, during which time he usually lined out at midfield. Kelly began his hurling career at club level with Lusmagh. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 15-year-old in 1971 and enjoyed his first success in 1973 when the club won the Offaly Junior Championship. Kelly later won an Offaly Senior Championship medal in 1989 when Lusmagh won their first and only title. He ended his club career with the Lusmagh junior B in 2003. At inter-county level, Kelly began his career at minor level in 1973 before progressing onto the Offaly under-21 team. He joined the Offaly senior team in 1974. Lusmagh
Lusmagh ( ga, Lusmhaigh) is a civil parish in County Offaly, Ireland, bounded by three rivers: the Shannon, Lusmagh and Little Brosna to the west, east and south respectively. The town of Banagher is northeast across the River Lusmagh. Lusmagh was considered part of County Galway in 1628 and Connacht until 1373; the Lusmagh Roman Catholic parish is the only one in the Diocese of Clonfert east of the Shannon. According to the history of the O'Kellys of Hy-Many, means the plain of the healing herbs. In Christian times, the parish was named , "the Church of Mo Chua". The Offaly Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by mid-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1929. The national media covers the competition.
