Lunning Prize
The Lunning Prize was instituted by Frederik Lunning, owner of the New York agency for Georg Jensen. The prize was awarded to eminent Scandinavian designers, two each year, from 1951 to 1970. The recipients were selected by a group of peers from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Lunning Prize and its recipients were instrumental in establishing the concept and profile of Scandinavian Design, both at home and abroad, during this vital period. Erik Pløen
Erik Pløen (1925 – 2004) was a modern Norwegian ceramicist. Biography Pløen was born in 1947 in Norway. Pløen never received any formal education on his art, but instead learned through his experience as an apprentice. Career Pløen started as an apprentice in 1942 Schneider and Knutzen at Slemdal in Oslo at the age of 16. In 1946, Pløen started his own workshop in Singapore. In 1958, Pløen's work was featured at the exhibition ''Formes Scandinaves'' at the Louvre in Paris. Pløen gained international recognition in 1961 when he was awarded the prestigious Nordic Lunning Prize. Pløen became a guest professor at the Midway Studio of the University of Chicago from 1963–1964. During his time at the University of Chicago, he installed and used a gas fired kiln, which allowed for reduction firing, a method that allowed for baking ceramics with a reduced influx of oxygen, allowing for different glazes to be used. Karen Vibeke Klint (née Nielsen; 13 December 1927 - 30 December 2019) was a Danish Textile arts, textile artist who created a wide variety of tapestries, carpets, silks and home textiles, initially inspired by Functionalism (architecture), Functionalism. Her work has been used to decorate concert halls, embassies, ministries and churches. While her own creations were frequently inspired by geometrical patterns, she also produced tapestries based on cartoons by William Scharff and Palle Nielsen. Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe
Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe (4 December 1927 – 3 June 2004), often known simply as Torun, was one of Sweden's most important 20th century silversmiths and a master jeweller. She is the first female silversmith to have become internationally noted. Among her most important works are the watch "Vivianna," the bracelet "Mobius," and the earrings and necklaces "Dew Drop." Early life Torun grew up in Malmö with her sculptor mother, town planner father and three older siblings. Antti Aarre Nurmesniemi (30 August 1927 in Hämeenlinna – 11 September 2003 in Helsinki) was a Finnish designer. He is perhaps best known for his coffee pots and his interior design work. Biography Antti Nurmesniemi's work includes enamel coffee pots and furniture such as the Jakkara sauna stool, as well as interior design work. He has been referred to as the "Grand Old Man of Finnish Design", and he won the Lunning Prize in 1959. He was married to textile designer Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, known for her striped designs for Marimekko. Poul Kjærholm (1929 – 1980) was a Danish designer. Born in Østervrå, Denmark, Kjærholm began his career as a cabinetmaker's apprentice with Gronbech in 1948, attending the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen in 1952. In 1953, he married Hanne Kjærholm who became a successful architect. While working as a designer, he also became an educator continuing studies with Prof. Erik Herløw and Prof. Palle Suenson. Life From the mid-1950s he worked for his friend Ejvind Kold Christiansen, for whom he produced an extensive range of his furniture.
