Vidlin (from Old Norse: ''Vaðill'' meaning a ford) is a small village located on Mainland, Shetland, Scotland. The settlement is within the parish of Nesting. History It is at the head of Vidlin Voe, and is the modern heart of the old parish of Lunnasting, which centred on the early church at Lunna on Lunna Ness. The Lunnasting stone, which bears an undeciphered Pictish ogham inscription was found nearby and donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland in 1876. Notable people Steven Robertson is a theatre and film actor who has appeared in a number of successful films. He was born in Vidlin and attended the local school. The poet Rhoda Bulter's mother came from Skelberry in Lunnasting, and she herself lived there for two crucially formative years when young. Lunnasting Stone
The Lunnasting stone is a stone bearing an ogham inscription, found at Lunnasting, Shetland and donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland in 1876. Discovery The stone was found by Rev. J.C. Rhoda Bulter
Rhoda Bulter (15 July 1929 – 1994), Shetland author, is one of the best-known Shetland poets of recent times. Biography Born Rhoda Jernetta Ann Johnson, in Lerwick, she was the daughter of Jeremiah Johnson, seaman, from West Houlland in the parish of Walls, and Barbara Huano Thomason, from Da Horn, Lower Skelberry, Lunnasting Vidlin (from Old Norse: ''Vaðill'' meaning a ford) is a small village located on Mainland, Shetland, Scotland. Nesting is a parish in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. It includes a part of the east Shetland Mainland, measuring about , along the seaboard from Gletness to Lunna Ness, and also the island of Whalsay and the Out Skerries. The coast is deeply indented by wiktionary:voe, voes and headlands. The arable land comprises only about , the remainder being mostly open moorland. The total area is given as . Ogham Inscription
Roughly 400 known ogham inscriptions are on stone monuments scattered around the Irish Sea, the bulk of them dating to the fifth and sixth centuries. Their language is predominantly Primitive Irish, but a few examples record fragments of the Pictish language. Ogham itself is an Early Medieval form of alphabet or cipher, sometimes known as the "Celtic Tree Alphabet". A number of different numbering schemes are used. The most widespread is CIIC, after R. A. S. Macalister (''Corpus Inscriptionum Insularum Celticarum'', Latin for "corpus of Insular Celtic inscriptions"). This covers the inscriptions known by the 1940s. Christine De Luca
Christine De Luca (born 4 April 1947) is a Scottish poet and writer from Shetland, who writes in both English and Shetland dialect. Her poetry has been translated into many languages. She was appointed Edinburgh's Makar, or poet laureate from 2014 to 2017. De Luca is a global advocate for the Shetland dialect and literature of the Northern Isles of Scotland. Early life and education De Luca was born Christine Pearson in Walls, Shetland. Her father, Sandy Pearson, was the headmaster of Happyhansel Junior Secondary School in Shetland. De Luca moved to Edinburgh in her late teens to study at University of Edinburgh. After graduation, she taught high school for several years and later obtained a Masters in Educational Research in 1980. Walls, Shetland
Walls, known locally as Waas (Old Norse: ''Vagar'' = "Sheltered Bays" (voes) - the Ordnance Survey added the "ll" as they thought it was a corruption of "walls". Cf Vágar and Vágur in the Faroe Islands), is a settlement on the south side of West Mainland, Shetland Islands in Scotland. The settlement is at the head of Vaila Sound and sheltered even from southerly storms by the islands of Linga and Vaila. Walls is within the parish of Walls and Sandness. History One of its old names is "Vagaland", hence the name of the local poet. A pier was built at Walls in the 18th century, and from 1838, it was a center for fish curing. The large houses of Bayhall, now converted into flats, and Voe House are signs of past wealth, as are the three churches visible around the head of the sound. Steven Robertson
Steven Robertson (born 1 January 1977) is a Scottish actor who stars as Detective Sandy Wilson in the BBC One adaptation of Ann Cleeves's ''Shetland'', filmed near where Robertson was born and brought up. He portrayed Michael Connelly, a young man with cerebral palsy, in ''Inside I'm Dancing'', and played Dominic Rook in the popular BBC Three comedy-drama series '' Being Human''. He has had roles in numerous television programs including ''Luther'' and ''The Bletchley Circle''. Personal life Robertson grew up in the small village of Vidlin in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, with his two sisters. In his childhood, Robertson battled and overcame severe dyslexia. Lunna Ness
Lunna (born June 30, 1960; born María Socorro García de la NocedaGarcia de la Noceda is her paternal surname) is a Puerto Rican singer of popular music and jazz who was the director of the television show ''Objetivo Fama'', the Latin version of ''American Idol''. Early years Lunna was born and raised by both her parents in Ponce, Puerto Rico. While in elementary school, she learned how to play the guitar and in 1972, her mother had her take private singing lessons. In the 1960s, while still in high school, she began to sing under the name "Sockey", which was short for her middle name Socorro. In 1978, Lunna auditioned and was accepted in a group called Allegro 72, a locally popular group which included singer Tito Lara and Luis Antonio Cosme.
