Lumphat
Lumphat ( km, លំផាត់) is a district in Ratanakiri Province, north-east Cambodia. In 1998, it had a population of 10,301. Lomphat, the former capital of Ratanakiri, is located in the district on the Srepok River. The town is home to fewer than 800 people. The district gives its name to the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary, a preservation area for the many unique species indigenous to Northeast Cambodia. Administrative divisions of Cambodia have several levels. Cambodia is divided into 24 provinces (''Khaet''; km, ខេត្ត, ) and the special administrative unit Phnom Penh. Though a different administrative unit, Phnom Penh is at province level, so ''de facto'' Cambodia has 25 provinces and municipalities. Srepok River
The Srepok River ( km, ទន្លេស្រែពក, ; vi, Sông Sêrêpôk) is a major tributary of the Mekong River. It runs from Đắk Lắk Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam through the Ratanakiri and Stung Treng provinces in Cambodia to join the Mekong near Stung Treng town. Its length varies from 406 km to 450 km in which the last 281 km course is in Cambodian territory. The Srepok River, in turn, has three main tributaries: the Krông Nô, Krông Ana, and Ea H'leo Rivers. Before joining the Mekong, the Srepok also merges with the Sesan River and Kong River in Stung Treng province. In Vietnam, it is also called Dak Krong river. Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary
Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area covering in eastern Cambodia that was established in 1993. It is heavily forested and straddles Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, and Kratie provinces. It is home to a variety of endangered wildlife such as banteng, gaur, dholes and sun bear, as well as leopards, Eld's deer, sambar deer, muntjacs and wild pigs. In addition, a number of rare birds are present: surveys have confirmed the presence of green peafowl, greater and lesser adjutant storks, sarus cranes, oriental pied hornbills, giant ibises, white-shouldered ibises, milky and woolly-necked storks, and slender-billed and white-rumped vultures, which are increasingly rare in most of South and Southeast Asia. A Chinese company is planning to build a dam on the Srepok River, which would flood the surrounding villages and inundate more than a third of the sanctuary.
