Luminous Groove
''Luminous Groove'' is a 2008 compilation box set of the albums ''Fegmania!'' (March 1985), '' Gotta Let This Hen Out'' (October 1985) and ''Element of Light'' (1986) by Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians. The box set was issued on CD and vinyl. The versions included in the CD box set are the extended reissues from YepRoc. The set also includes 2 discs of B-sides and rarities called ''Bad Case of History''. (The vinyl set had all the extra tracks from the extended CDs removed. These were re-assembled onto three LPs, with another two LPs of B-sides and rarities, as per the CD set.) A box set or (its original name) boxed set is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) traditionally packaged in a box and offered for sale as a single unit. Robyn Rowan Hitchcock (born 3 March 1953) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. While primarily a vocalist and guitarist, he also plays harmonica, piano, and bass guitar. After leading the Soft Boys in the late 1970s and releasing the influential ''Underwater Moonlight'', Hitchcock launched a prolific solo career. His musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Syd Barrett, Captain Beefheart, Martin Carthy, Lou Reed, Roger McGuinn and Bryan Ferry. Hitchcock's earliest lyrics mined a rich vein of English surrealist comic tradition and tended to depict a particular type of eccentric and sardonic English worldview. Yep Roc Records is an American independent record label based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and owned by Redeye Distribution. Fegmania!
''Fegmania!'' is the fourth studio album by Robyn Hitchcock and his first with his backing band The Egyptians. The Egyptians included the former Soft Boys Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor. "The Man with the Lightbulb Head" was conceived on Archway Road in London and provided a springboard for Hitchcock's first attempt at film making for a promotional video. Stills from the video were reproduced as cover art for the front and back of the LP sleeve. The album was quickly followed by the live album, ''Gotta Let This Hen Out!'', recorded at one gig at The Marquee Club in Wardour Street, London. Reissues Eight bonus tracks were added to the subsequent Rhino CD reissue of the album, including an acoustic demo of "Insect Mother" which had been recorded for possible inclusion in the earlier ''I Often Dream of Trains'', and "The Pit of Souls", a lengthy psychedelic instrumental in four 'movements'. Gotta Let This Hen Out
''Gotta Let This Hen Out!'' is a live recording of Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians recorded in April 1985, shortly after the group had come together for ''Fegmania!''. The set was recorded at the Marquee and the tapes cleaned up for release at Alaska Studios with minor drop-in overdubs. The gig was also videotaped and appeared on VHS with a few additional numbers, interspersed with several studio recordings available through their promo videos. The material selected for this album includes titles ranging through Hitchcock's back catalogue, from Soft Boys songs ("Kingdom Of Love", "The Face Of Death") through his first solo album ("Acid Bird", "Brenda's Iron Sledge") and up to the recently released ''Fegmania!'' ("Heaven", "My Wife and My Dead Wife"). Element Of Light
''Element of Light'' is the fifth studio album by singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock and his second with his backing band, the Egyptians. It was released in 1986. Most of the album was recorded at Alaska Studios and Berry Street, but two tracks, "The President" and "Lady Waters & The Hooded One", were live recordings made for the BBC, with overdubs recorded on BBC Mobile and at Alaska. The album title derives from the song "Airscape", which has been cited several times by Hitchcock as a favourite among his own compositions, and a live rendition was tagged on to later CD editions. "Airscape" concerns his "favourite beach", Compton Beach on the Isle of Wight, which also provided a backdrop for the cover shots. He was inspired by learning about the erosion of the cliffs, and imagining the ghosts of people who had walked the cliffs centuries ago now suspended over the water. Marquee Club
The Marquee Club was a music venue first located at 165 Oxford Street in London, when it opened in 1958 with a range of jazz and skiffle acts. Its most famous period was from 1964 to 1988 at 90 Wardour Street in Soho, and it finally closed when at 105 Charing Cross Road in 1996, although the name has been revived unsuccessfully three times in the 21st century. It was a small and relatively cheap club, located in the heart of the music industry in London's West End, and used to launch the careers of generations of rock acts. It was a key venue for early performances by bands who were to achieve worldwide fame in the 1960s and remained a venue for young bands in the following decades.
