Luke Clough
Luke James Clough (4 July 1878 – 3 December 1956) was an Australian politician. He was born at Pinegrove near Echuca to farmer Thomas Clough and Mary Howe. He became a market gardener in Bendigo and then a bootmaker. He was a founding member of the Bendigo East branch of the Labor Party and served as branch president; he was also on the state executive from 1911 to 1914. Echuca, Victoria
Echuca ( ) is a town on the banks of the Murray River and Campaspe River in Victoria, Australia. The border town of Moama is adjacent on the northern side of the Murray River in New South Wales. Echuca is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Shire of Campaspe. As of the , Echuca had a population of 15,056, and the population of the combined Echuca and Moama townships was 22,568. Echuca lies within traditional Yorta Yorta country. The town's name is a Yorta Yorta word meaning "meeting of the waters". Echuca is close to the junction of the Goulburn, Campaspe, and Murray Rivers. The Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), commonly known as Victorian Labor, is the semi-autonomous Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). The Victorian branch comprises two major wings: the parliamentary wing and the organisational wing. The parliamentary wing comprising all elected party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, which when they meet collectively constitute the party caucus. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the caucus, and party factions have a strong influence in the election of the leader. Bendigo East is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It covers an area of covering the part of the city of Bendigo east of the Yungera railway line and surrounding rural areas to the north, east and south. It includes the Bendigo suburbs of East Bendigo, Epsom, Flora Hill, Junortoun, Kennington, Quarry Hill, Spring Gully, Strathdale, Strathfieldsaye and White Hills, and the surrounding towns of Axedale, Goornong, Huntly, Mandurang, Raywood and Sedgwick. Alfred Hampson
Alfred John Hampson (15 September 1864 – 19 May 1924) was an Australian politician. Born in White Hills, a suburb of Bendigo, Victoria, Hampson received a primary education before becoming a eucalyptus and soap manufacturer. In 1911, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Bendigo East. He remained in that position until 1915, when he transferred to the Australian House of Representatives, winning a by-election for the seat of Bendigo. He remained in Parliament until 1917, when the Nationalist Prime Minister, Billy Hughes, contested the seat and defeated Hampson. Hampson remains the only sitting MP to have been challenged and ousted by the sitting prime minister for his seat.
