Luisa Moreno
Luisa Moreno (August 30, 1907 – November 4, 1992) was a leader in the United States labor movement and a social activist. She unionized workers, led strikes, wrote pamphlets in English and Spanish, and convened the 1939 ''Congreso de Pueblos de Habla Española'', the "first national Latino civil rights assembly", before returning to Guatemala in 1950. Early life Moreno was born Blanca Rosa López Rodríguez to a wealthy family in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Disenchanted with the gender restrictions on educational attainment, she organized her elite, wealthy peers into La Sociedad Gabriela Mistral. This group used petition drives and informal lobbying to successfully advocate for the admission of women to Guatemalan universities. El Congreso de Pueblos de Habla Española (the Spanish-Speaking People's Congress), commonly referred to as El Congreso, was a California-based coalition of Latino labor and civil rights activists that operated in the 1930s and 1940s. El Congreso's inaugural meeting on December 4, 1938 was spearheaded by Luisa Moreno in Los Angeles. Josefina Fierro De Bright
Josefina Fierro (1914 in Mexicali, Baja California – March 1998), later Josefina Fierro de Bright, was a Mexican-American leader who helped organize resistance against discrimination in the American Southwest during the Great Depression. She was the daughter of immigrants who had fled revolution in Mexico to settle in California. She grew up in Los Angeles and the San Joaquin Valley. Her mother emphasized the importance of education and urged Josefina to "Rely on yourself, be independent." In 1938 when Fierro was 18 years old, she entered the University of California, Los Angeles. She planned to study medicine, but activism on behalf of the Mexican American community took up most of her time and effort. The Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) was a federation of unions that organized workers in industrial unions in the United States and Canada from 1935 to 1955. Originally created in 1935 as a committee within the American Federation of Labor (AFL) by John L. Lewis, a leader of the United Mine Workers (UMW), and called the Committee for Industrial Organization. Its name was changed in 1938 when it broke away from the AFL.
