Luis Jiménez (sculptor)
Luis Alfonso Jiménez Jr. (July 30, 1940 – June 13, 2006) was an American sculptor of Mexican descent. Known for portraying Hispanic-American themes, his works have been displayed at the Smithsonian and at Denver International Airport. Education Born in El Paso, Texas, he worked at his father's neon sign studio as a child. He studied art and architecture at the University of Texas in Austin and El Paso, earning a bachelor's degree in 1964. He moved to New York City in 1966 after completing his post-graduate work at Ciudad Universitaria, Mexico City, D.F. He became an accomplished artist and taught art at the University of Arizona and later the University of Houston. Artistry Jiménez was known for his large polychromed fiberglass sculptures usually of Southwestern and Hispanic themes. Blue Mustang
''Blue Mustang'', or ''Mustang'', and colloquially known as ''Blucifer'', is a cast-fiberglass sculpture of a mustang located at Denver International Airport (DEN). Colored bright blue, with illuminated glowing red eyes, it is notable both for its striking appearance and for having killed its sculptor, Luis Jiménez, when a section of it fell on him at his studio. Construction Origins ''Blue Mustang'' was commissioned in 1992 for $300,000, and was not erected at DIA until 2008. Like most public art in Denver, the statue was paid for by developers, who since 1988 have been required to contribute 1% of the cost of major capital projects to public art in the city. The original proposal had been for a sculpture of a buffalo stampede, but this was deemed inappropriate, since buffalo had been hunted to near extinction in the West. Border Crossing/Cruzando El Rio Bravo
''Border Crossing/Cruzando el Rio Bravo'', or ''Border Crossing (Cruzando el Rio Bravo)'', is a sculpture by Luis Jiménez. It depicts a Mexican man carrying his wife and their baby on his shoulders as they cross the Rio Grande. One fiberglass copy, completed in 1989, was purchased by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and San Diego Museum of Art and installed in the May S. Marcy Sculpture Garden.
