Luigi Centurini
Luigi Centurini (Genoa, April 24, 1820 – Genoa, November 10, 1900) was an Italian jurist, chess player, and chess composer. In 1853 he published the pamphlet in Genoa titled ''Giuoco degli Scacchi'' (Game of Chess). The endgame of rook and knight against rook was a study that made him known worldwide. In 1865 he wrote a work about the "gambetto grande" (Gambit) that appeared on ''Eco della Scienza'', but his studies especially address the endgame. Basic Chess Endings
''Basic Chess Endings'' (abbreviated BCE) is a book on chess endgames which was written by Grandmaster Reuben Fine and originally published on October 27, 1941. It is considered the first systematic book in English on the endgame phase of the game of chess. It is the best-known endgame book in English and is a classic piece of chess endgame literature. The book is dedicated to World Champion Emanuel Lasker, who died in 1941 (the year the book was published). It was revised in 2003 by Pal Benko. Cecil Purdy said "... Giorgio Porreca
Giorgio Porreca (30 August 1927 – 5 January 1988) was an Italian chess player. He was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE. Born in Naples, he won the Italian Chess Championship two times: at Sorrento in 1950 (ahead of Nicolas Engalicev) and at Rovigo in 1956. He was seven times winner of the Italian correspondence championship in the period from 1957 to 1973 (no other Italian player equalled this feat). He played for Italy in three Chess Olympiads: at Dubrovnik 1950 (3rd board), Helsinki 1952 (1st board) and Amsterdam 1954 (2nd board) with the overall result of (+ 17 – 11 = 15). Porreca was also twice winner of the Italian club championship with team Genoa. Porreca wrote several books on chess history. He had a university degree in Russian language and Russian literature and translated a number of Russian chess books into Italian. A chess composer is a person who creates endgame studies or chess problems. Chess composers usually specialize in a particular genre, e.g. endgame studies, twomovers, threemovers, moremovers, helpmates, selfmates, fairy problems, or retrograde analysis. Moreover, composers have their own preferred style of composing, allowing their sorting according to composition schools. Some chess composers produce huge numbers of chess compositions, while others try to achieve as much quality as possible and present new works only rarely. It is possible for chess composers to gain official FIDE titles, usually for a given number of problems published in FIDE Albums. For example, Milan Vukcevich was an International Grandmaster of Chess Composition, as well as an International Master player.
