Luigi Cavenaghi
Emilio Cavenaghi, an Italian painter of landscapes and genre pieces, was born in Caravaggio in 1852. He studied under Giuseppe Bertini. ''La Stanza Poldi'' and ''The Music Amateur'', are two of his best works. He also designed many woodcuts for book-illustrations. He painted the decorations and sipario (curtain) of Teatro Manzoni. Giuseppe Bertini
Giuseppe Bertini (1825–1898) was an Italian painter, active in his native Milan. Biography He studied at the Brera Academy under Luigi Sabatelli and Giuseppe Bisi, and in 1845 was awarded the ''Gran premio di pittura dell'Accademia di Brera'' on the strength of a picture of the meeting between ''Dante and Fra Ilario''. He also painted the ''Triumphal entry of the allied sovereigns into Milan after the Battle of Magenta'' (after 1859). He also painted frescoes on a vaulted room of the residence of the Puricelli Guerra, representing the great men of the Middle Ages, backgrounded against perspectives of Gothic architecture. Teatro Manzoni
The Teatro Manzoni is a theatre in the northern Italian city of Milan, located on the Via Manzoni. Opened in 1870 it was originally called the ''Teatro sociale di Milano'', before being renamed after Alessandro Manzoni following his death in 1873. It was originally located on the Piazza San Fedele. A growing reputation led to celebrated actors such as Eleonora Duse and Sarah Bernhardt appearing there. In the twentieth century it remained a key venue until it was destroyed by Allied bombing in August 1943 during the Second World War. The theatre moved to its current location and was rebuilt to designs by the architect Alziro Bergonzo, opening in 1950. The first manager of the relaunched theatre was the impresario Remigio Paone. In 1978 ownership was acquired by Silvio Berlusconi's Fininvest, with artistic control passing to Luigi Foscale. Woodcut Designers
Woodcut is a relief printing technique in printmaking. An artist carves an image into the surface of a block of wood—typically with gouges—leaving the printing parts level with the surface while removing the non-printing parts. Areas that the artist cuts away carry no ink, while characters or images at surface level carry the ink to produce the print. The block is cut along the wood grain (unlike wood engraving, where the block is cut in the end-grain). The surface is covered with ink by rolling over the surface with an ink-covered roller (brayer), leaving ink upon the flat surface but not in the non-printing areas. Multiple colors can be printed by keying the paper to a frame around the woodblocks (using a different block for each color).
