Lucy Arce
Luz Z. "Lucy" Arce Ferrer is a Puerto Rican politician. She is currently serving as a member of the Senate of Puerto Rico since 1996. Early years and studies Lucy Arce was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. She completed her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, graduating cum laude. She was then certified in Public Housing Administration by Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Professional career Arce has worked as a teacher with the Head Start Program, and as an Ombudsman for the Aguadilla region. She also worked as Regional Director of the Public Housing Administration in Aguadilla, and then as Regional Manager of the Association of Commonwealth Employees (AEELA) in Arecibo. In 1993, Arce was appointed as Auxiliar Administrator of the Retirement System Administration for the Government Employees of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican General Election, 2008
The 2008 Puerto Rican general elections were held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 to elect the officials of the Government of Puerto Rico that would serve for the next four years, most notably the Governor of Puerto Rico. The election was won by incumbent Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuño (from the New Progressive Party), who defeated the incumbent Governor, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá (from the Popular Democratic Party). Fortuño received 1,025,965 votes, and Acevedo Vilá 801,071. Also, most of the other positions were won by the candidates of the New Progressive Party, who ended up with a majority of seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives. The elections occurred after one term of what was called "shared government", as a result of the 2004 elections. The 2008 New Progressive Party primaries were the primary elections by which voters of the New Progressive Party (PNP) chose its nominees for various political offices of Puerto Rico, namely the position of governor, for the 2008 general elections. Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuño was selected as the nominee at the primary elections held on March 9, 2008. He would go on to win the 2008 general election as well.
