Lucretia St. Clair Joof (born 1913 in Bathurst, died August 1982) was the first female member of House of Representatives of the Gambia, She died in August 1982 Career Lucretia St. Clair Joof was the first Gambian female member of the legislature. St. Clair Joof was a secondary school teacher in the early 1930s, later working as a clerk at a French retailer. After a bill to increase the number of nominated in the House of Representatives from two to four was passed in August 1968. President Dawda Jawara nominated her as another member. Since 1964, St. Clair Joof worked as a council member of the Bathurst City Council (BCC) and was nominated again in that capacity in January 1968. Additionally she served as chairman of the Parks and Recreational Committee and was responsible for the construction of the playground on the MacCarthy Square and the King George V Memorial Park. The House of Representatives of the Gambia was the legislature of the Gambia from 1960 to 1994, succeeding the Legislative Council and being succeeded by the National Assembly. History The House of Representatives was established by the 1959 constitution drawn up by Edward Henry Windley, then Governor of the Gambia. It came into operation for the 1960 election, replacing the Legislative Council. Initially, the House had 34 members. 27 of these were directly elected, seven were nominated, and there was also a Speaker. 19 were elected directly by universal suffrage, with a voting age of 21, and the other 8 were elected indirectly by the Conference of Protectorate Chiefs. Of the 19 directly elected members, 12 represented the Protectorate, and 7 represented the Colony constituencies. Dawda Jawara
Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara (16 May 1924 – 27 August 2019) was a Gambian politician who served as Prime Minister from 1962 to 1970, and then as the first President of the Gambia from 1970 to 1994. Jawara was born in Barajally, MacCarthy Island Division, the son of Mamma Fatty and Almami Jawara. He was educated at the Methodist Boys' School in Banjul (Bathurst) and then attended Achimota College in Ghana. He trained as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Glasgow's School of Veterinary Medicine, then completed his training at the University of Liverpool and University of Edinburgh. He returned to The Gambia in 1953 and married Augusta Mahoney, beginning work as a veterinary officer. He decided to enter politics and became secretary of the new People's Progressive Party (PPP) and was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1960 election.
