Lucille Wall
Lucille Loretta Wall (January 18, 1898 – July 11, 1986)Cox, Jim (2008). ''This Day in Network Radio: A Daily Calendar of Births, Debuts, Cancellations and Other Events in Broadcasting History''. McFarland & Company, Inc.; was an American actress who played the role of Lucille March Weeks on the ABC soap opera ''General Hospital'' from 1963 to 1976. When Wall was ill in 1975, the role was played by Mary Grace Canfield, who was a quarter-century younger than Wall. Wall returned to the show for infrequent guest appearances over the years, the last in 1982. Early years Lucille Loretta Wall was born in Chicago, Illinois. Actress Geraldine Wall was her sister, and she had another sister, Mildred. During her teenage years, Wall leaned toward a career in music, but she eventually turned toward radio for her career. ''The First Nighter Program'' was a long-running radio anthology comedy-drama series broadcast from November 27, 1930, to September 27, 1953. The host was Mr. First Nighter (Charles P. Hughes, Macdonald Carey, Bret Morrison, Marvin Miller, Don Briggs and Rye Billsbury (later known as Michael Rye). An article in a 1939 newspaper observed, "First Nighter was the first show to present complete and separate original plays each week." The show's opening recreated the aural atmosphere of a Broadway opening. ''Lorenzo Jones'' was a daytime radio series which aired on NBC in different timeslots over an 18-year span. Produced by Frank and Anne Hummert, the series could be classified with its own unique category of "comedy soap opera", highlighted by organist Rosa Rio's rollicking rendition of the opening theme music, " Funiculi, Funicula". Portia Faces Life, is an American soap opera first broadcast as a radio series from 1940 to 1953, and then on television for a single season in the mid-1950s. It began in syndication on April 1, 1940, and was broadcast on some stations that carried NBC programs, although it does not seem to have been an official part of that network's programming. The original title was ''Portia Blake Faces Life''. Stations airing the series, according to newspaper advertisements included WNAC in Boston, WLS in Chicago, KRLD in Dallas, KGW in Portland, Oregon and KFI in Los Angeles. The series became part of the CBS Radio Network, on October 7, 1940 and its title was changed to ''Portia Faces Life''. It was sponsored by the company General Foods. Jane Cowl (December 14, 1883 – June 22, 1950) was an American film and stage actress and playwright "notorious for playing lachrymose parts". Actress Jane Russell was named in Cowl's honor. Biography Cowl was born Jane Bailey in Boston, Massachusetts, to Charles Bailey and Grace Avery. She attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York City. And she also took some courses at Columbia University. She made her Broadway debut in New York City in '' Sweet Kitty Bellairs'' in 1903. A repertory theatre is a theatre in which a resident company presents works from a specified repertoire, usually in alternation or rotation. United Kingdom Annie Horniman founded the first modern repertory theatre in Manchester after withdrawing her support from the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. Horniman's Gaiety Theatre, Manchester, Gaiety Theatre opened its first season in September of 1908. The opening of the Gaiety was followed by the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow and the Liverpool Repertory Theatre. Previously, regional theatre relied on mostly London touring ensembles.
