Lucas Mansion
The Lucas Mansion, also known as the Hiddenite Center, is a historic home located at Hiddenite, Alexander County, North Carolina. It was built about 1900, and is a three-story, frame Queen Anne style dwelling. It features a two-story wraparound porch. It was enlarged to its present size by 1928. Local tradition says the house was enlarged twice by raising the existing floor and building a new floor beneath or between the existing floors. The house roughly follows a cruciform plan, though the plan varies from floor to floor. It was owned by James Paul Lucas, a South Carolina native and international diamond merchant. Hiddenite, North Carolina
Hiddenite is a census-designated place (CDP) in east-central Alexander County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hickory–Lenoir– Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town of Hiddenite was incorporated in 1913, but its charter was repealed in 1919. Hiddenite was named for William Earl Hidden (1853–1918), a mineralogist sent to North Carolina by Thomas Edison to look for platinum. Hidden discovered the gem that came to be known as "hiddenite" in 1879 in mines nearby. Until recently it was found only in Alexander County, North Carolina, but in recent decades it has been subsequently found in Madagascar and Brazil. The Hiddenite Gem Mines and surrounding areas also yield emeralds, sapphires, and many other precious stones. Alexander County is a county established in the U.S. state of North Carolina in 1847. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,444. Its county seat is Taylorsville. Alexander County is part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area.
