Luc Durtain
André Robert Gustave Nepveu (March 10, 1881, Paris – January 29, 1959), known under his pseudonym Luc Durtain, was a French poet, novelist, journalist, playwright and a physician by profession. Life Durtain's talents were discovered by Jules Romains who introduced him to the group Abbaye de Créteil. There he became close friends with writers Charles Vildrac and Georges Duhamel. In 1908, Durtain published the collection of poems Pegasus, written in the style of unanimism. Durtain served as a doctor during the First World War and wrote his first novel in the trenches. His novel was eventually published in 1922 and highly praised by critics. It was not until the mid twenties however where became well known by establishing himself as a travel writer. His books on America, such as The 40th Floor and Frank and Marjorie, contrast the achievements of technology with the intellectual impoverishment of contemporary bourgeois society. Frans Masereel
Frans Masereel (31 July 1889 – 3 January 1972) was a Flemish painter and graphic artist who worked mainly in France, known especially for his woodcuts focused on political and social issues, such as war and capitalism. He completed over 40 wordless novels in his career, and among these, his greatest is generally said to be '' Passionate Journey''. Masereel's woodcuts influenced Lynd Ward and later graphic artists such as Clifford Harper, Eric Drooker, and Otto Nückel. Biography Upbringing Frans Masereel was born in the Belgian coastal town Blankenberge on 31 July 1889, and at the age of five, his father died. His mother moved the family to Ghent in 1896. She met and married a physician with strong Socialist convictions, and the family together regularly protested against the appalling working conditions of the Ghent textile workers. The ''épuration légale'' (French "legal purge") was the wave of official trials that followed the Liberation of France and the fall of the Vichy regime. The trials were largely conducted from 1944 to 1949, with subsequent legal action continuing for decades afterward. Unlike the Nuremberg Trials, the ''épuration légale'' was conducted as a domestic French affair. Approximately 300,000 cases were investigated, reaching into the highest levels of the Collaboration with the Axis Powers during World War II, collaborationist Vichy government. More than half were closed without indictment. From 1944 to 1951, official courts in France sentenced 6,763 people to death (3,910 in absentia) for treason and other offenses. Only 791 executions were carried out, including those of Pierre Laval, Joseph Darnand, and the journalist Robert Brasillach; far more common was "dégradation nationale, national degradation" — a loss of civil rights, which was meted out to 49,723 people. Jean Luchaire
Jean Luchaire (21 July 1901 – 22 February 1946) was a French journalist and politician who became the head of the French collaborationist press in Paris during the German military occupation. Luchaire supported the ''Révolution nationale'' declared by the French Government after it relocated to the spa town of Vichy in 1940. Family Jean Luchaire was born in Siena, Italy, a grand-nephew of historian Achille Luchaire. He was married, with four children. Inter-war years Before World War II Luchaire frequented the French Chamber of Deputies, where Aristide Briand had begun a strong association with Luchaire, the latter's newspaper supported Briand's policy for a ''rapprochement'' with Germany (while it was still the Weimar Republic).
