Lowton St Mary's Railway Station
Lowton St Mary's railway station served the scattered community of Lowton, then in Lancashire, now in Greater Manchester, England. It was situated immediately south of the A572 bridge over the tracks. History The station opened on 1 April 1884 along with six other stations on the Wigan Junction Railways (WJR), which was backed by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR). One source gives the station's early name as plain "Lowton", but the Bradshaws of April 1884 and July 1922 both use "Lowton St Mary's". 19th Century Lowton, like Langwith in Derbyshire, was a scattered rural ''area'' rather than one village, with communities having related names, such as Lowton St Mary's and Lowton Common as well as the plain Lowton. Lowton is a suburban village within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, England. It is around from Leigh, south of Wigan and west of Manchester city centre. The settlement lies across the A580 East Lancashire Road. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Lowton's history is closely connected with Byrom Manor, the ancestral home of the Byroms, a family which included poet John Byrom; the inventor of a system of shorthand. During the Industrial Revolution Lowton was associated with coal mining and manufacturing, given its proximity to several nearby collieries and factories. Haydock Park Racecourse is a racecourse in Merseyside, North West England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, the racecourse is set in an area of parkland bounded by the towns of Haydock to the west, Ashton-in-Makerfield to the north, Golborne to the east and Newton-le-Willows to the south. Hindley South railway station served the communities of Hindley and Platt Bridge, south-east of Wigan, England.
