Lower Cheung Sha Beach
Lower Cheung Sha Beach is a gazetted beach located in Cheung Sha in southern Lantau Island, Hong Kong. The beach is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Government. The beach is 96 metres long and is rated as good to fair by the Environmental Protection Department for its water quality in the past twenty years. Near the beach is the Upper Cheung Sha Beach, but the Upper Cheung Sha Beach is not connected to the Lower Cheung Sha Beach. Usage The beach is set within a large embayment on Lantau Island’s southern coastline formed by the Chi Ma Wan Peninsula and Luk Keng Shan. The beach, along with Tong Fuk and Upper Cheung Sha beaches, offers beautiful views of Cha Kwo Chau. Cheung Sha
Cheung Sha () is a rural area on the south coast of Lantau Island, New Territories, Hong Kong. Along the South Lantau Road, Cheung Sha is located between Tong Fuk (to the southwest) and San Shek Wan (to the northeast). The most notable feature of the area is the Cheung Sha Beach, the longest beach in Hong Kong. Lantau Island
Lantau Island (also Lantao Island, Lan Tao) is the largest island in Hong Kong, located West of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula, and is part of the New Territories. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), is a department in the Government of Hong Kong. It reports to the Culture, Sports & Tourism Bureau, headed by the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism. Upper Cheung Sha Beach
Upper Cheung Sha Beach is a gazetted beach in Cheung Sha in southern Lantau Island, Hong Kong. The beach has barbecue pits and is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Government of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Government. The beach is rated as good to fair by the Environmental Protection Department for its water quality in the past twenty years. It is still the longest beach in Hong Kong. History On 5 June 2015, a body of a woman in her 30s was found floating in the water near the beach. When the marine police and fireboat arrived at the scene, she was pronounced dead. On 21 November 2018, a carcass of a finless porpoise that had its tail trapped in a fishing net was found by police officers at the beach that caused it to be temporarily closed. Tong Fuk Beach
Tong Fuk Beach is a gazetted beach located on South Lantau Road in Tong Fuk, Lantau Island, Hong Kong. The beach is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Government. The beach is 150 metres long and is rated as good to fair by the Environmental Protection Department for its water quality in the past twenty years. It is a popular holiday resort in Lantau Island. History On 21 December 2018, a carcass of a subadult female finless porpoise was found by Ocean Park personnel at the beach that caused it to be temporarily closed. The Ocean Park Conservation Foundation had transported the finless porpoise back to Ocean Park for autopsy. Beaches Of Hong Kong
Hong Kong has a long coastline that is full of twists and turns with many bays and beaches. Many of them are well sheltered by mountains nearby, as Hong Kong is a mountainous place. As a result, large waves seldom appear at the bays, making them suitable for human swimming. However, with the increasing development and urbanisation of Hong Kong, water quality has worsened resulting in the closure of several beaches previously suitable for swimming. These include Approach Beach, Ting Kau Beach, Anglers' Beach, Gemini Beaches, Hoi Mei Wan Beach, Casam Beach and Lido Beach in Tsuen Wan. In 2011, Lido Beach, Casam Beach, Approach Beach and Hoi Mei Wan Beach were reopened following an improvement in water quality.
