Low Fi
''Low Fi'' is the third EP by English-French rock band Stereolab, released in September 1992 by Too Pure. The title of the final track "Elektro (He Held the World in His Iron Grip)" is taken from the cover of the thirteenth issue of the comic book ''Tales of Suspense'', released in 1961. It is the first Stereolab release to feature longtime drummer Andy Ramsay and backing vocalist Mary Hansen, who stayed with the band until her death in 2002. Stereolab
Stereolab are an Anglo- French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. Led by the songwriting team of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the group's music combines influences from krautrock, lounge and 1960s pop music, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French. Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the Surrealist and Situationist movements. On stage, they play in a more feedback-driven and guitar-oriented style. The band also draw from funk, jazz and Brazilian music, and were one of the first artists to be dubbed "post-rock". They are regarded among the most innovative and influential groups of the 1990s. Noise Pop
Noise pop is a subgenre of alternative and indie rock that developed in the mid-1980s in the United Kingdom and United States. It is defined by its mixture of dissonant noise or feedback with the songcraft more often found in pop music. Shoegazing, another noise-based genre that developed in the 1980s, drew from noise pop. Too Pure
Too Pure was a London-based independent record label formed in 1990 by Richard Roberts and Paul Cox. The label gained prominence after the release of PJ Harvey's debut album '' Dry'' in 1992, and subsequently found further success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with albums by indie rock artists such as Mclusky and Electrelane. The label was closed in 2008. History Too Pure started off as an experimental label and built its reputation by releasing primarily alternative/independent music which its founders felt was being ignored by major labels. At its inception Too Pure was largely preoccupied by the so-called Camden Lurch scene, through its 'Sausage Machine' night in North London (documented by its ''Now That's Disgusting Music'' (1990) compilation). ''Peng!'' is the debut studio album by English-French rock band Stereolab. It was released on 26 May 1992 by Too Pure in the United Kingdom. The album was issued in the United States on 13 June 1995 by Too Pure and American Recordings. A remastered edition of the album was released on 9 November 2018 by Too Pure and Beggars Arkive. The album's title (a German onomatopoeia for a loud pop or bang) and cover art are derived from a comic strip named "Der tödliche Finger" that appeared in a 1970 issue of ''Hotcha'', a Swiss underground newspaper. Different panels of the same strip were adapted into cover art for other early Stereolab releases, and remain popular icons for the band. ''Switched On'' (also known as ''Switched On Stereolab'' or ''Switched On Volume 1'') is a compilation of Stereolab's first three releases, and was originally released in 1992. The album's name is in tribute to ''Switched-On Bach'' and other similar titles from the late 1960s to 1970s that feature Moog synthesizers as the primary instrument. ''Switched On'' was later licensed to Slumberland Records for a US release, and Rough Trade Germany, for that country, both in 1992. Compiled of tracks from ''Super 45'' and ''Super-Electric'' EPs plus the ''Stunning Debut Album'' 7" single, the album forms the first part of a pentalogy (as of 2022) of Stereolab rarities collections along with ''Refried Ectoplasm'' and ''Aluminum Tunes''. ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music. Mary Hansen
Mary Therese Hansen (1 November 1966 9 December 2002) was an Australian-born guitarist and singer. She joined the London-based avant-pop band Stereolab in 1992. As a member, Hansen recorded six studio albums from '' Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements'' (August 1993) to '' Sound-Dust'' (August 2001). As a side-project, in late 1999 she formed the space rock group Schema with members of Seattle-based band Hovercraft, and they issued their debut album, ''Schema'', on 19 September 2000. On 9 December 2002, Hansen was killed after being struck by a truck while bicycling in London. ''Pulse of the Early Brain'' is a compilation album by the English-French avant-pop band Stereolab, released on 2 September 2022 under Duophonic Records and Warp Records. It is the fifth installment of the band's "Switched-On" series which collects the band's rarities, such as the EPs ''Simple Headphone Mind'' (1997) and '' Low Fi'' (1992); bonus and exclusive tracks from ''Chemical Chords'' (2008); and individual tracks from other albums, split singles and flexi discs.
