Lovespirals
Lovespirals is an American dream pop and electronic music band from Southern California, featuring husband and wife, multi-instrumentalist/producer Ryan Lum and lyricist/vocalist Anji Bee. History The origins of Lovespirals began with a 1998 side project of Lum's Projekt Records band, Love Spirals Downwards. The new outfit found Lum teaming up with Doron Orenstein and Gabriel D. Vine of Subliminal (record label), Subliminal Records duo, Monkey Bars for the instrumental track "Beatitude". Bee joined in as vocalist soon after. At first, Lovespirals' music picked up where Lum left off with ''Flux (Love Spirals Downwards album), Flux'', the final Love Spirals Downwards' studio album, creating drum and bass and downtempo compositions. The first officially released song was a jazzstep remix of Claire Voyant (band), Claire Voyant's "Bittersweet," for ''Time Again (Claire Voyant album), Time Again: A Collection of Remixes,'' in April 2000. Love Spirals Downwards was an American, California-based band, that incorporated ethereal wave, dream pop, drum and bass and electronica. History Love Spirals Downwards was begun by multi-instrumentalist Ryan Lum and then-girlfriend Suzanne Perry. In 1991, Lum and Perry recorded a demo, which led to a contract with Projekt Records. Over its 8-year history, the band released four full-length albums, a career retrospective and a CD single, selling (by their own account) in excess of 40,000 albums. They were also included on over two dozen various artist compilations, including the ''Heavenly Voices'' series released by the German label Hyperium records, Hyperium Records. Perry's sister Kristen collaborated with Lum and Perry on two tracks on the 1998 album, ''Flux (Love Spirals Downwards album), Flux''. Projekt is a Portland, Oregon-based independent record label started by Sam Rosenthal in 1983. Projekt releases music in the styles of darkwave, ambient, shoegaze, gothic rock, ethereal, dream-pop, and dark cabaret. Projekt artists include Sam Rosenthal's own Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Steve Roach, Voltaire, Erik Wøllo, Unto Ashes, Weep (Doc Hammer, co-writer of the Adult Swim show The Venture Bros.), Mira, and Android Lust. Chill-out (shortened as chill; also typeset as chillout or chill out) is a loosely defined form of popular music characterized by slow tempos and relaxed moods. The definition of "chill-out music" has evolved throughout the decades, and generally refers to anything that might be identified as a modern type of easy listening. The term "chill-out music" – originally conflated with "ambient house" – came from an area called "The White Room" at the Heaven nightclub in London in 1989. There, DJs played ambient mixes from sources such as Brian Eno and Pink Floyd to allow dancers a place to "chill out" from the faster-paced music of the main dance floor. Ambient house became widely popular over the next decade before it declined due to market saturation. Dream pop (also typeset as dreampop) is a subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions, and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the two genre terms have at times been used interchangeably.
