Lovers (1999 Film)
''Lovers'' is a 1999 French drama film directed by Jean-Marc Barr. It was the fifth film and the first non-Danish film to be made under the self-imposed rules of the Dogme 95 manifesto. Plot Jeanne and Dragan meet in a Paris bookshop - she's working there, he's looking for a book on the English painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The two strike up a passionate affair, but Dragan doesn't tell her that he is in the country illegally. He is best known for working on several films from Danish film director and frequent collaborator Lars von Trier since ''Europa'' (1991). Dogme 95 is a 1995 avant-garde filmmaking movement founded by the Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, who created the "Dogme 95 Manifesto" and the "Vows of Chastity" ( da, kyskhedsløfter). These were rules to create films based on the traditional values of story, acting, and theme, and excluding the use of elaborate special effects or technology. It was supposedly created as an attempt to "take back power for the directors as artists", as opposed to the studio.
