''Lourtella'' is a monotypic genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Lythraceae. The only species is ''Lourtella resinosa'' . It is native to Peru and Bolivia. Alicia Lourteig
Alicia Lourteig (1913–2003) was an Argentine and French botanist, world specialist in Oxalidaceae. Personal life and education Alicia Lourteig was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her parents originated from France and Argentina. She studied pharmacy and biochemistry at university in Buenos Aires, and her doctorate was awarded in 1946. Career Despite the subjects she studied at university, Lourteig's career was as a botanist, particularly as a taxonomist of the Lythraceae, Ranunculaceae, Mayacaceae and Oxalidaceae. Her interests extended to the history of botany in South America and the Antilles. She was employed as a botanist from 1938 until 1947 at the Miguel Lillo Institute within the University of Tucuman. She then moved to the Darwinion Botanic Institute in San Isidro. She was able to visit other herbaria in America and Europe. Lythraceae is a family of flowering plants, including 32 genera, with about 620 species of herbs, shrubs, and trees. The larger genera include ''Cuphea'' (275 spp.), ''Lagerstroemia'' (56), ''Nesaea'' (50), ''Rotala'' (45), and ''Lythrum'' (35). It also includes the pomegranate (''Punica granatum'', formerly in Punicaceae) and the water caltrop (''Trapa natans'', formerly in Trapaceae). Lythraceae has a worldwide distribution, with most species in the tropics, but ranging into temperate climate regions as well. The family is named after the type genus, ''Lythrum'', the loosestrifes (e.g. ''Lythrum salicaria'' purple loosestrife) and also includes henna (''Lawsonia inermis''). Pieter Baas
Pieter Baas (born 28 April 1944) is a Dutch botanist. He is an emeritus professor of plant systematics at Leiden University. He served as director of the of Leiden University between 1991 and 1999. When the institute was faced with budget cuts in 1993 he managed to preserve the collection by joining it with the university collections of Wageningen and Utrecht. This led to the founding of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands in 1999. Baas subsequently became director of the institute and served until 2005. As a botanist Baas specializes in wood anatomy. Early life and career Baas was born on 28 April 1944 in the municipality of Wieringermeer. He attended the MULO and later the HBS. Baas grew up with a broad interest in science. Plants are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Historically, the plant kingdom encompassed all living things that were not animals, and included algae and fungi; however, all current definitions of Plantae exclude the fungi and some algae, as well as the prokaryotes (the archaea and bacteria).
