Louisiana Highway 19
Louisiana Highway 19 (LA 19) is a state highway located in southeastern Louisiana. It runs in a north–south direction from U.S. Highway 61 (US 61) in Baton Rouge to the Mississippi state line north of Norwood. The route connects a string of communities projecting northward out of Baton Rouge, the state capital, including the small suburban cities of Baker and Zachary. It traverses two of the Florida Parishes, East Baton Rouge and East Feliciana, in a nearly linear fashion as the entire route parallels a railroad line. LA 19 has three notable junctions, two of which provide access to downtown Baton Rouge. These are US 61 and Interstate 110 (I-110) and are located within the first of the route on its southern end. 1955 Louisiana Highway Renumbering
In 1955, Louisiana passed a law that undertook a comprehensive revision to the state highway classification and numbering system. The new system designated roads by importance to travel patterns and rectified the previous numbering system under new unified designations. History Highway numbers in Louisiana first appeared in 1921, per Act 95 of the 1921 Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Routes 1 through 98 were defined that year. These first 98 routes remained consistent throughout the pre-1955 era. The lowest numbered routes seem to have followed major auto trails; for instance, LA 1 was the Jefferson Highway, LA 2 was the Old Spanish Trail, etc. The remainder of the numbering system seemed to work on a lower-number, higher-order principle, with some clustering; for instance, LA 61 and 62 both existed in St. Bernard Parish. Gloster Southern Railroad
The Gloster Southern Railroad was a United States shortline railroad that operated in Mississippi and Louisiana. The GLSR began operation in 1990 and provided freight service from Gloster, Mississippi, to the Illinois Central Railroad (now Canadian National Railway - CN) interchange at Slaughter, Louisiana. The line was owned by Georgia-Pacific (GP) which had purchased and refurbished of an abandoned branch line to provide service to a GP oakwood mill in Gloster. The GLSR operated four or five freight trains per week until the plant closed in December 2002. One year later, Genesee and Wyoming Inc acquired three short-line railroads from GP. However, this sale did not include the GLSR. In September 2004, GP announced that they would re-open the Gloster oakwood mill. However, they did not continue to operate the GLSR. Slaughter, Louisiana
Slaughter is a town in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 U.S. census, down from 1,011 at the 2000 U.S. census. At the 2020 population estimates program, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated 882 people lived in the township. Slaughter is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan statistical area. Central, Louisiana
Central is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, second largest city in East Baton Rouge Parish, and part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan statistical area. The state's newest incorporated city in April 2005, Central had a 2020 census population of 29,565. History Long an unincorporated suburb of Baton Rouge, the citizens of Central voted to incorporate as a city on April 23, 2005, despite opposition from the parish. Businessman Russell Starns headed the incorporation movement, saying it was based on residents' desire to establish a school system separate from that of East Baton Rouge Parish. Louisiana Highway 64
Louisiana Highway 64 (LA 64) is a state highway located in southeastern Louisiana. It runs in a general east–west direction from LA 964 in Zachary to the junction of LA 16 and LA 1026 north of Denham Springs. The highway traverses the northern portion of East Baton Rouge Parish and connects Zachary and Central, two suburban cities located outside of Baton Rouge. LA 64 also provides the only highway crossing of the Amite River between Grangeville, to the north, and Denham Springs, to the south. LA 64 reaches the bridge by way of a concurrency with LA 37 through Greenwell Springs, a rural community now within the city limits of Central.
