Louise M. Shadduck (October 14, 1915 – May 4, 2008), also called the "Lioness of Idaho,"Carlson, Chis. ''Medimont Reflections''. (Ridenbaugh Press: 2013). was an Idaho journalist, political activist, public servant, author, speaker and lobbyist,Steele, Karen Dorn. and the first woman in the United States to serve at the state cabinet level. As Idaho's popular Secretary of Commerce and Development, often leading visiting business executives on horseback adventures in the mountains, she stimulated the state's economy to its ten best years of growth. She was also administrative assistant to two governors, a U.S. Senator and a Congressman. A historian, she was renowned for her ability to remember names and personal stories. Robert Eben Smylie (October 31, 1914 – July 17, 2004) was an American politician and attorney from Idaho. A member of the Idaho Republican Party, he served as the 24th governor of Idaho for twelve years, from 1955 to 1967. He was the first Governor of Idaho who was born in the 20th century. Early life and education Born in Marcus, Iowa, Smylie graduated from high school in Cresco in 1932 at the height of the Great Depression. Gracie Bowers Pfost (March 12, 1906 – August 11, 1965) was the first woman to represent Idaho in the United States Congress, serving five terms as a Democrat in the House of Representatives. Pfost represented the state's 1st district from 1953 to 1963. Early years Born in an Ozark Mountain log cabin in Harrison, Arkansas, Pfost was five when her parents moved to a farm near Boise, Idaho, in 1911. One of five siblings, she quit Meridian High School at 16 in 1922 and worked as a milk analyst at a dairy in Nampa.
