Louis Braun
Louis Braun (23 September 1836 – 18 February 1916) was a German painter, mostly of battle scenes. Biography He was born at Schwäbisch Hall, Württemberg, and was educated in Munich and in Paris. He followed as an illustrator the Austrian army during the Danish War of 1864 and painted several battle scenes for Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. He also accompanied the German armies in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, and as a result exhibited his pictures entitled “Entry of the Mecklenburg Troops into Orleans,” “The Capitulation of Sedan,” “The Battle of Sedan” (later exhibited at Frankfurt am Main and elsewhere as a panorama), “The Germans in Versailles,” and “The Entry of the German Army into Paris.” The great success of the “Battle of Sedan,” in panoramic form, induced Braun (who in 1902 held a professorship in Munich) to produce several other works of the same description. Battle Of Lützen (1813)
In the Battle of Lützen (German: ''Schlacht von Großgörschen'', 2 May 1813), Napoleon I of France defeated an allied army of the Sixth Coalition. The Russian commander, Prince Peter Wittgenstein, attempting to forestall Napoleon's capture of Leipzig, attacked the French right wing near Lützen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, surprising Napoleon. Quickly recovering, he ordered a double envelopment of the allies. After a day of heavy fighting, the imminent encirclement of his army prompted Wittgenstein to retreat. Due to a shortage of cavalry, the French did not pursue. The next battle would be fought at Bautzen three weeks later. Hans Von Petersen
Hans Ritter von Petersen (24 February 1850, Husum - 18 June 1914, Munich) was a German marine artist. He also painted landscapes, but they received little notice. Life and work He received his artistic training in private art schools, and studied with the Danish marine artist, Anton Melbye. This was followed by studies in London. Some sources indicate that he also briefly attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. This was followed by sea voyages to North and South America, India, and West Africa;, to acquire direct knowledge of his chosen subject. In 1884, while in West Africa, he was employed as a sketch artist by the ''Illustrirte Zeitung''. In 1885, he was attracted to Munich by an opportunity to work on a panorama of the German colonies, two of which, Togoland and Kamerun, may have been among the places he visited in Africa.
