Louis Botha Avenue
Louis Botha Avenue (part of Johannesburg Metropolitan Route '' M11'') is a major street in Johannesburg, South Africa. Originally part of the main road between central Johannesburg and Pretoria, it runs along through the north-eastern parts of the city from Hillbrow to Sandton, passing through numerous older suburbs, including Houghton and Orange Grove, before it becomes the ''Pretoria Main Road'' (R101) which passes the Alexandra Township and continues to Midrand and Pretoria. Route Louis Botha Ave, which is part of the M11 Metropolitan Route, begins at the top of the Johannesburg CBD in the suburbs of Hillbrow and Berea and then heads north-east passing through Houghton to the north and Yeoville and Bellevue to the south. In Houghton it passes close to the private boys schools of St John's College (1889) and King Edward VII school (1911). Hillbrow
Hillbrow () is an inner city residential neighbourhood of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa. It is known for its high levels of population density, unemployment, poverty, prostitution and crime. In the 1970s it was an Apartheid-designated "whites only" area but soon became a "grey area", where people of different ethnicities lived together. It acquired a cosmopolitan and politically progressive feel, and was one of the first identifiable gay and lesbian areas in urban South Africa. However, due to the mass growth of the population of poor and unemployed black people after the end of Apartheid, crime soared and the streets became strewn with rubbish. This, together with lack of investment and fear led to an exodus of middle-class residents in the 1980s and the decay of major buildings, leaving in its wake an urban slum by the 1990s. Midrand
Midrand is a former municipality in central Gauteng, South Africa. It is situated in-between Centurion and Sandton and now forms part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. History Midrand was established as a municipality in 1981 (in an area known as ''Halfway House'', after its position between Pretoria and Johannesburg), but ceased to be an independent town in the restructuring of local government that followed the end of apartheid in 1994. It was incorporated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in 2000. It was made part of Region 2 and, as of 2006, when the number of regions were reduced to seven, it forms part of Region A of the City of Johannesburg. M20 Road (Johannesburg)
The M20 is a short metropolitan route in the Greater Johannesburg metropolitan area, South Africa. It connects Randburg in the western part of Johannesburg with Edenvale in the east. Route The M20 begins at the intersection of M8 Judges Avenue and M13 Republic Road in Cresta. The route winds its way south as Republic Road, passing Cresta Shopping Centre on its right and then rounds the northern end of the Darrenwood Dam. It then heads south-east, still as Republic Road, through the suburb of Linden, crossing 1st Street and becoming 3rd Avenue until it reaches the intersection with M30 Tana Road. Orchards, Johannesburg
Orchards is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. It is a small suburb surrounded by the wealthy suburb of Oaklands as well as Norwood, Sydenham and The Gardens. History Orchards was declared as a suburb in March 1902. The land at the time was said to be covered in around 2,500 fruit and ornamental tree with an existing homestead. The orchards of the suburb were watered by the ''Orange Grove Spruit'', a seasonal stream with its source on the ridge above Louis Botha Avenue close to Fellside. Most of the stream through the suburb is now either underground or canalized with it eventually forming up with the ''Sandspruit'' river.
