Shining (Swedish Band)
Shining is a Swedish black metal band formed in 1996 by Niklas Kvarforth in Halmstad, Sweden. The band's music contains depressive undertones, which include personal and suicide-themed lyrics. The band's name does not refer to the book '' The Shining'' or the film based on it, but rather it means "the path to enlightenment", according to Kvarforth. History Kvarforth is the main composer and vocalist of the band and started the band when he was twelve. By the time Kvarforth was fourteen, Shining had released their first EP '' Submit to Selfdestruction'' (1998) on which he played guitars and bass. It was not until the band released their first album, ''Within Deep Dark Chambers'' (2000), that Kvarforth became the band's vocalist. was a Swedish rock band from Stockholm, that existed from 1983 to 1988. History started as , a side project to the Swedish punk band , and included three of its members. When broke up in 1983, re-emerged as ; with Joakim Thåström (lead vocals, guitar), Anders "Stry" Sjöholm (vocals, guitar) and Gunnar "Gurra" Ljungstedt ( drums), all three originally from . They were joined by Christian Falk ( bass) and Per Hägglund ( sax, keyboards). Stry left in 1984 and Gurra the following year. Gurra was replaced by Fred Asp on the drums. Arcana is Sweden, Swedish neoclassical dark wave band created in 1994 by Peter Bjärgö. History The original band consisted of founder Peter Bjärgö (then Peter Pettersson) and vocalist Ida Bengtsson. Since 2002, Arcana has changed line-up and now consists of Peter Bjärgö, Stefan Eriksson, Ann-Mari Thim, Ia Bjärgö and Mattias Borgh. Dragonland is a power metal band from Sweden. The group is known for their self-produced ''The Dragonland Chronicles'' fantasy saga covering their first, second, and fifth albums, and for the original symphonic/electronic parts by Elias Holmlid. Niklas Olsson (born 7 December 1983), better known as Niklas Kvarforth, is a Swedish singer and songwriter. He is the founder, composer, and vocalist of the black metal band Shining. Background As a multi-instrumentalist musician, Kvarforth started Shining when he was only 12 years old, in 1996. The band released their first EP, '' Submit to Selfdestruction'', two years later, on which he played guitars and bass. It was not until the band released their first album, ''Within Deep Dark Chambers'', that Kvarforth became the band's vocalist. ''B-Sidor 95–00'' is a B-side collection by Swedish alternative rock band Kent. It was released in November 2000 and features two new songs, " Chans" and "Spökstad". "Rödljus II" and "En helt ny karriär II" are new recordings of the original ones. Hidden track "Papin jahti" is an improvisation where the band's drummer Markus sings in Finnish. "Spökstad" is one of the most rare Kent singles as it was sent out and then retracted. Some copies found their way to the record stores before it was retracted. ''Tonight's Decision'' is the fourth full-length album by Katatonia, released in 1999 by Peaceville Records. It was reissued in 2003 with two bonus tracks. Background Around this time, the band were being influenced less by metal and more by alternative, with Renkse citing Jeff Buckley, whose song "Nightmares by the Sea" was covered on this album, as well as Radiohead as examples. Renske's close friend, Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, was present to help record, produce and work on ideas for vocal tracks. Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen (born 16 November 1973) is a Finnish musician/songwriter/producer, and the keyboardist of the Finnish rock band Poets of the Fall. Kaarlonen first became known in the underground with his Amiga MOD music in the early 1990s. His first commercial album was released as Dance Nation's album ''Dawn'' in 1994. After that he worked as producer for pop group Aikakone. Kaarlonen also worked for the software company Futuremark as a Senior Web Developer and Audio Designer. Poets of the Fall (POTF) is a Finnish rock band from Helsinki. The group consists of Marko Saaresto (lead vocals), Olli Tukiainen (lead guitar), Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen (keyboards, production), Jani Snellman (bass), Jaska Mäkinen (rhythm guitar), and Jari Salminen (drums, percussion). History Early years (2003–2004) The band was founded on 25 April 2003 by Saaresto and Tukiainen. Tukiainen had written multiple songs for Saaresto's previous band ''Playground'' and performed with Finnish jazzband ''Pohjoinen Syke'' previously. In 2003, Saaresto's friend Sami Järvi, a script-writer working at Remedy Entertainment handed Saaresto a poem he had written, asking him to turn it into a song to use in Remedy's video game '' Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne''.
