''Lost Horizon'' is a 1933 novel by English writer James Hilton. The book was turned into a film, also called ''Lost Horizon'', in 1937 by director Frank Capra. It is best remembered as the origin of Shangri-La, a fictional utopian lamasery located high in the mountains of Tibet. Plot summary Overview Hugh Conway, a veteran member of the British diplomatic service, finds inner peace, love and a sense of purpose in Shangri-La, whose inhabitants enjoy unheard-of longevity. The prologue and epilogue are narrated by a neurologist. This neurologist and a novelist friend, Rutherford, are given dinner at Tempelhof, Berlin, by their old school-friend Wyland, a secretary at the British embassy. A chance remark by a passing airman brings up the topic of Hugh Conway, a British consul in Afghanistan, who disappeared under odd circumstances. ''Lost Horizon'' is a 1937 American adventure drama fantasy film directed by Frank Capra. The screenplay by Robert Riskin is based on the 1933 novel of the same name by James Hilton. The film exceeded its original budget by more than $776,000 and took five years to earn back its cost. The serious financial crisis it created for Columbia Pictures damaged the partnership between Capra and studio head Harry Cohn, as well as the friendship between Capra and Riskin. In 2016, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Lost Horizon is a power metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band has esoteric stage personas similar to sword and sorcery fantasy, with the members wearing studded leather, cloaks and face paint. In their albums' liner notes, their stage names and roles are exaggerated to sound mystical and otherworldly in nature; for example, guitarist and lyricist Wojtek Lisicki is credited as the "Earthshape" of the "Transcendental Protagonist" and credited for "Poesy of Spiritual Enlightenment/String Romanticism", with his proper roles given as a "Translation For Mortals". History Lost Horizon was originally formed under the name Highlander in 1990, with future HammerFall member Joacim Cans on vocals. The band went on hiatus from 1994 to 1999. ''Lost Horizons'' is the second studio album from the British electronic duo Lemon Jelly, released on 7 October 2002. Released by XL Recordings and produced by Nick Franglen, the album generated two charting singles in the UK, "Space Walk" and "Nice Weather for Ducks"; the latter has often been called the album's stand-out track. The album, which is built around a mix of organic instrumentation and idiosyncratic samples, was met with largely positive reviews by music critics, although it was somewhat criticised due to its near-constant mellowness. ''Lost Horizons'' is the only studio album released by the symphonic metal band Luca Turilli's Dreamquest. The album featured, until then, an unknown female vocalist (but in the official YouTube channel of Luca Turilli, the unknown female vocalist was revealed as Bridget Fogle, who appeared in ''The Infinite Wonders of Creation'') and Italian musician Luca Turilli, guitarist for Rhapsody of Fire and a number of solo albums, plays keyboards.
