Los Angeles City Marshal
The Los Angeles City Marshal was the chief law enforcement officer of Los Angeles in the city's early years. The City Marshal was an office created in 1850 upon the city's incorporation. The title was City Marshal, Tax and Licence Collector. The title of Chief of Police was added in 1871. In 1876 the position of City Marshal was eliminated. Jacob F. Gerkens as the first officer to hold the new title of Chief of Police. J.J. Carrillo continued as Tax and Licence Collector in 1876 - 1877. The second City Marshal, Jack Whaling, was shot in 1853. This led to the creation of the "Los Angeles Rangers", a volunteer force who assisted the City Marshal and County Sheriff. At this time, law enforcement was limited and the Marshal had use of but one small county jail. In 1869, William C. Juan José Carrillo (September 8, 1842 – March 30, 1916) was a Californio politician and judge, who served as Mayor of Santa Monica and as the last City Marshal of Los Angeles. Biography Carrillo was born in Santa Barbara to Pedro Carlos Antonio Carrillo (1818–1888) and Maria Josefa Bandini (1823–1896). He was a member of the Carrillo family of California, a prominent Californio family. His mother was one of three Bandini sisters; Maria Josefa, Ysidora, and Arcadia. His grandfather Carlos Antonio Carrillo (1783–1852) was Governor of Alta California from 1837 to 1838. Joseph Franklin Dye
Joseph Franklin Dye (1831–1891) was an American forty-niner and alleged member of the Mason Henry Gang. He was also a rancher and early oilman in Southern California. Early life Joseph Franklin Dye was born in Union County, Kentucky in 1831 as one of 16 children in a family that later settled in Texas. In 1849, he and two of his brothers came west in the California Gold Rush but returned the next year. In 1853 following his father's death, Joe Dye left the family farm and worked for several years as a miner and mule team driver various places in the Southwest. In that first year, he shot a man while in Santa Fe, wounding him in the neck during a fight over a card game. From March 17, 1860 Joseph F.
