	Los Amos Del Valle Los Amos del Valle (''Masters of the Valley'') is a Venezuelan novel written by psychiatrist Francisco Herrera Luque and published in 1979. The novel describes Venezuelan life since the conquest of Caracas Valley until Simón Bolivar's baptism. The title makes reference to the Mantuano, noble families who had great control of this particular area. 	Francisco Herrera Luque Francisco José Herrera Luque (Caracas, 14 December 1927 – Caracas, 15 April, 1991) was a Venezuelan writer, psychiatrist and diplomat. He is the author of several well-known historical novels, including: ''Boves, el Urogallo'' (1972), ''Los Amos del Valle'' (1979) and ''La Luna de Fausto'' (1983). He was the son of Francisco Herrera Guerrero and María Luisa Luque Carvallo. In 1956, he married Maria Margarita Terán Austria, with whom he had five children. Herrera Luque studied in the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) and later at the University of Salamanca (1952), where he obtained his title of physician. In Madrid he specialized in psychiatry, a field on which he wrote several scientific papers. His PhD thesis served as basis for his book: ''Los Viajeros de Indias'' (1961), about the psychopathic loads left on the Venezuelan population by the Spanish conquistadors. 	Mantuano ''Mantuano'' is a denomination assigned, first in Caracas and later in the rest of Venezuela, to the ''blancos criollos'' (white creole) belonging to the local aristocracy. The term was in use from the 18th century until well into the 19th century. The ''mantuanos'' hardly surpassed a hundred heads of family by the end of the 18th century. The ''mantuanos'' were also called "'' grandes cacaos''", because they became rich with the cultivation and commercialization of cocoa. They were also called ''blancos criollos''. The name ''blanco criollo'' only indicates that a person was born in America and was a descendant of Spaniards, while the word ''mantuano'' refers to members of the local elite. Other whites who also had the same birthplace and ancestry of Spanish origin, such as the '' blancos de orilla'', were not part of the ''mantuano'' circle.
