Lorna Fejo
Lorna "Nanna Nungala" Fejo (14 June 1930 – 25 February 2022) was a Warumungu woman named by the Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, in his historic Apology to the Stolen Generations, on 13 February 2008. At four years of age, she was forcibly removed from her family and community at Tennant Creek. She never again saw her mother, who died before Fejo was able to leave institutional care. Fejo was initially sent to The Bungalow (in Alice Springs), and was later sent to Methodist missions on Goulburn Island and then Croker Island. Fejo was allowed to leave the mission at age sixteen, to take a domestic job in Darwin. Since 1973 Fejo has been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1998 Fejo was given the Australian Medical Association's Best Individual Contribution to Healthcare in Australia Award, for her contribution as the coordinator of the Strong Women, Strong Babies, Strong Culture program in the Northern Territory. Warumungu
The Warumungu (or Warramunga) are a group of Aboriginal Australians of the Northern Territory. Today, Warumungu are mainly concentrated in the region of Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. Language Their language is Warumungu, belonging to the Pama–Nyungan family. It is similar to the Warlpiri spoken by the Warlpiri people. It is a ''suffixing language'', in which verbs are formed by adding a tense suffix (although some verbs are formed by compounding a ''preverb''). As are many of the surviving Indigenous Australian languages, the Warumungu language is undergoing rapid change. The morphology used by younger speakers differs significantly than the one used by older speakers. Library & Archives NT comprises the Northern Territory Library and the two Northern Territory Archives Centres in Darwin and Alice Springs. Located in Parliament House in Darwin City, it is the premier public research and archival organisation focused on the history, development and culture of the Northern Territory of Australia. The library holds more than 108,000 books and 30,000 items. The archive holds Northern Territory Government records, which are normally opened 30 years after they were created. Croker Island
Croker Island is an island in the Arafura Sea off the coast of the Northern Territory, Australia, northeast of Darwin. It was the site of the Croker Island Mission between 1940 and 1968. Indigenous peoples At the earliest time of European contact, the Indigenous people of Croker Island were the Jaako, an Aboriginal Australian people who spoke Marrgu, a language isolate. Goulburn Islands
The Goulburn Islands are a group of small islands and islets in the Arafura Sea off the coast of Arnhem Land in Northern Territory of Australia. The largest islands are Weyirra (North Goulburn Island) and Warruwi (South Goulburn Island), where the climate is slightly cooler than in Darwin. The Warruwi or Maung people are the traditional owners of the Goulburn Islands.
