Horace Brooks Marshall, 1st Baron Marshall Of Chipstead
Horace Brooks Marshall, 1st Baron Marshall of Chipstead, (5 August 1865 – 29 March 1936) was an English publisher and newspaper distributor and Lord Mayor of London, 1918–1919. Early life Marshall was born in Streatham, Surrey, a suburb of London. He was educated at Dulwich College and Trinity College, Dublin, and then joined his father's wholesale newspaper business in Fleet Street. Horace Brooks Marshall Sr (1830–1896) pioneered the sales of books and publications on the railways. As Horace Marshall and Son, it became one of the largest such businesses in the United Kingdom. Civic career After his father's death in 1896, Marshall succeeded him unopposed as member of the Court of Common Council of the City of London for Farringdon Without. He was Sheriff during the coronation year 1902, and was knighted in the 1902 Coronation Honours, receiving the accolade from King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace on 24 October that year. Frank Marshall, Baron Marshall Of Leeds
Frank Shaw Marshall, Baron Marshall of Leeds KBE (26 September 1915 – 1 November 1990) was a British lawyer and politician who was a member of the House of Lords from 1980 until his death in 1990. Biography Marshall was born in Wakefield and attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. He then studied law at Downing College, Cambridge. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Tank Regiment, and after the war qualified as a solicitor. He was a member of Leeds City Council from 1960 and led the council from 1967 to 1972. He was knighted in 1971 for "services to local government" and was created a life peer on 11 July 1980, taking the title Baron Marshall of Leeds, of Shadwell in the City of Leeds. He was considered to be "a grandee of the Conservative Party at the national level". Walter Charles Marshall, Baron Marshall of Goring (5 March 1932 in Rumney, Cardiff – 20 February 1996, in London) was a noted theoretical physicist and leader in the UK's energy sector. Early life The son of Frank Marshall and Amy Pearson, he attended the grammar school St Illtyd's Boys College (now St Illtyd's Catholic High School). He studied mathematical physics at Birmingham University and gained a PhD there under Rudolf Peierls. Career He joined the Theoretical Physics Division at AERE Harwell in 1954, succeeding Brian Flowers as Head of that Division in 1960 and becoming Director of AERE in 1968; he eventually was appointed Chairman of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority in 1981.
