Lord Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Each lieutenant raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of his county, and afterwards of the yeomanry and volunteers. Henry Greville, 3rd Earl Of Warwick
Henry Richard Greville, 3rd Earl of Warwick, 3rd Earl Brooke, KT (29 March 1779 – 10 August 1853), styled Lord Brooke from 1786 to 1816, was a British Tory politician. Life Warwick was the son of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, by his second wife Henrietta (née Vernon), and was educated at Winchester. Henry undertook an extensive Grand Tour between June 1801 and August 1803, his travels taking him to Copenhagen, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Switzerland and throughout Italy. In March 1803 he joined Sir William Drummond and George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, on Captain Sir John Gore's ship the HMS Medusa to bring Drummond to Constantinople. Henry undertook another tour to Italy during the late 1820s, where he purchased a set of Pietra Dure tables from the Grimanni Palace in Venice, a set which were sold by Merlin Entertainments at Sotheby's in 2015. Francis Humphrey Maurice FitzRoy Newdegate, 3rd Viscount Daventry (17 December 1921 – 15 February 2000), was a British peer who was High Sheriff of Warwickshire during 1970 and Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire from 1990 to 1997. Biography Lord Daventry was the son of Commander Hon John Maurice FitzRoy Newdegate, youngest son of Edward FitzRoy and Muriel FitzRoy, 1st Viscountess Daventry. His mother was Lucia Charlotte Susan Newdigate Newdegate, heiress of Sir Francis Newdegate, of Arbury Hall, Warwickshire. His father took the additional surname of Newdegate and inherited the Arbury estates on the death of his father-in-law in 1936. Lord Daventry came into the Arbury estates on the death of his father in 1976. He was High Sheriff of Warwickshire for 1970 and Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire from 1990 to 1996. Sir Charles Mortimer Tollemache Smith-Ryland KCVO (May 24, 1927 – 1989) was Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire from 1968 to 1989. The son of Captain Charles Ivor Phipson Smith-Ryland, he was educated at Eton College and married Jeryl Marcia Sarah Gurdon, daughter of Robert Brampton Gurdon and sister of the third Baron Cranworth, in 1952. He was a member of Warwickshire County Council from 1949, being Vice-Chairman in 1963 and Chairman from 1964 to 1967. John Verney, 20th Baron Willoughby De Broke
Air Commodore John Henry Peyto Verney, 20th Baron Willoughby de Broke, MC, AFC (21 May 1896, London – 25 May 1986) was a British peer. Background and education The son of Richard Verney, 19th Baron Willoughby de Broke, and Marie Frances Lisette Hanbury, Verney was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He succeeded his father in 1923. Military career During the First World War, he was awarded the Military Cross (1918). At the end of hostilities, he became aide-de-camp to the Governor of Bombay, Sir George Lloyd, from 1919 to 1922 and adjutant of the Warwickshire Yeomanry from 1925 to 1929. Captain Hugh de Grey Seymour, 6th Marquess of Hertford (22 October 1843 – 23 March 1912), styled Earl of Yarmouth from 1870 to 1884, was a British soldier, courtier and Conservative politician. He notably served as Comptroller of the Household between 1879 and 1880. Francis Leigh, 3rd Baron Leigh
Colonel Francis Dudley Leigh, 3rd Baron Leigh (30 July 1855 – 16 May 1938) was a British peer and Warwickshire landowner. He was Lord of the Manor of Hunningham. An officer in the Warwickshire Yeomanry and honorary colonel of several volunteer and Territorial formations associated with the county, he served as an ambulance driver in the First World War. In 1921, he became Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, and held the post until his death in 1938. He had no children by either of his two marriages, so his peerage passed to a nephew. He was the second son of William Henry Leigh, 2nd Baron Leigh and his wife Caroline. He was educated at Harrow School and then at Trinity College, Cambridge, which awarded him a BA in 1879 and a MA in 1882.
