Lord Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Each lieutenant raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of his county, and afterwards of the yeomanry and volunteers. James Cecil, 5th Earl Of Salisbury
James Cecil, 5th Earl of Salisbury (8 June 1691 – 9 October 1728), known as Viscount Cranborne from 1691 to 1694, was a British nobleman, politician, and peer. Salisbury was the son of James Cecil, 4th Earl of Salisbury, and Frances Bennett, and succeeded his father in the earldom in 1694. From 1712 to 1714 he served as Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire. Lord Salisbury married Lady Anne Tufton, daughter of Thomas Tufton, 6th Earl of Thanet, on 12 February 1709. They had four children: *James Cecil, 6th Earl of Salisbury (1713–1780) *Catherine Cecil (c. 1722–1752), married John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont and had issue. *Anne Cecil (c. 1728–1752) *Margaret Cecil (died 1752) died, unmarried, of smallpox, at the Earl of Egmont's in Pall-Mall. Lord Salisbury died in October 1728, aged 37, and was succeeded in his titles by his son James. Lady Salisbury died in 1756. The Countess Anne school in Hatfield, founded in 1735, is named after her. Dione Grimston, Countess Of Verulam
Dione Angela Grimston, Countess of Verulam, (née Smith; born 19 July 1954) is a British artist and former Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire. The daughter of Jeremy Smith and Julia Burrell, she is maternally granddaughter of Sir Walter Burrell, 8th Baronet. She married John Grimston, 7th Earl of Verulam, on 12 September 1976. Simon Alexander Bowes-Lyon
Sir Simon Alexander Bowes-Lyon (born 17 June 1932) is a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and was Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire from 1986 to 2007. He was created a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in The Queen's Birthday Honours List 2005. He was born in 1932, the son of Sir David Bowes-Lyon (2 May 1902 – 13 September 1961), who also served as Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, and Rachel Pauline Spender-Clay (19 January 1907 – 21 January 1996), younger daughter of Herbert Spender-Clay. Major General Sir Walter Arthur George Burns, (29 January 1911 – 5 May 1997) was a British Army officer and native of Hertfordshire. Early life Burns was born on 29 January 1911 to art collector Walter Spencer Morgan Burns (1872–1929), and Ruth Evelyn Cavendish-Bentinck (1883–1978), who married in 1907. His sister was Cynthia Mary Burns, the first wife of Sir John Carew Pole, 12th Baronet. His father was a nephew of the prominent American banker J. P. Morgan and a grandson of Junius Spencer Morgan. His maternal grandparents were American heiress Elizabeth Livingston Cavendish-Bentinck (a daughter of Maturin Livingston Jr.) and William George Cavendish-Bentinck MP (a son of George Cavendish-Bentinck MP). Sir David Bowes-Lyon KCVO (2 May 1902 – 13 September 1961) was the sixth son and last child of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck, as well as their tenth and youngest child. Brigadier General Thomas Walter Brand, 3rd Viscount Hampden (29 January 1869 – 4 September 1958) was a British peer and soldier, the son of the 2nd Viscount Hampden. Education He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Marriage and family On 29 April 1899, he married Lady Katharine Mary Montagu-Douglas-Scott (a daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch), and they had eight children. Edward Hyde Villiers, 5th Earl of Clarendon, (11 February 1846 – 2 October 1914), styled Lord Hyde between 1846 and 1870, was a British Liberal Unionist politician from the Villiers family. James Walter Grimston, 2nd Earl of Verulam (20 February 1809 – 27 July 1895), known as Viscount Grimston from 1815 to 1845, was a British peer and Conservative politician. He was the eldest son of James Walter Grimston, 1st Earl of Verulam, and Lady Charlotte Jenkinson. He succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Verulam in November 1845. James Walter Grimston, 1st Earl of Verulam (26 September 1775 – 17 November 1845), styled Lord Dunboyne from 1775 until 1808 and known as the 4th Viscount Grimston from 1808 to 1815, was a British peer and politician. Life and career He was the son of James Grimston, 3rd Viscount Grimston of Gorhambury House and Harriot Walter. In 1802 he was elected to the House of Commons for St Albans, a seat he held until 1808, when he succeeded his father as fourth Viscount Grimston and second Baron Verulam and entered the House of Lords. The latter year, he also succeeded his maternal cousin as tenth Lord Forrester. In 1815 he was created Viscount Grimston and Earl of Verulam in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
