The Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire, is the British monarch's personal representative in an area consisting of the county of Aberdeen as it existed immediately prior to abolition for local government purposes by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 except that part within Aberdeen City. The office was created on 6 May 1794. Lord Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Each lieutenant raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of his county, and afterwards of the yeomanry and volunteers. James Richard Ingleby (born March 1945) was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire by Her Majesty The Queen on 13 July 2010 having been made a Deputy Lieutenant in July 1992. He is an Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a member of the Royal Company of Archers, a former Director of Aberdeen and Northern Marts and a past Chairman of the North East Landowners Federation and of the North East Sail Training Association. Sir Angus Dune Miller Farquharson of Finzean (27 March 1935 – 10 January 2018) was Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire from 1998 to 2010. Career He was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire in 1984 and as Vice Lord-Lieutenant in 1987. He became a Commander of the Order of St John in 2009 having been an Officer of the Order since 2002. He was awarded the honour of OBE in 1995 for services to forestry and the community in Aberdeenshire and upon his retirement as Lord-Lieutenant in 2010, was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. He served on the Red Deer Commission from 1986 to 1992. He has been an elder of the Church of Scotland since 1969 and served on the board of General Trustees from 1995 to 2006. Sir Maitland Mackie, (16 February 1912 – 18 June 1996), often known as Mike Mackie, was a British Liberal Party politician, farming pioneer, educational innovator and Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. Background and family He was the son of Dr Maitland Mackie OBE and Mary Yull. He attended Aberdeen Grammar School. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a BSc in Agriculture in 1933. Major David George Ian Alexander Gordon, 4th Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair (21 January 1908 – 13 September 1974) was a British peer, soldier, and the son of Dudley Gordon, 3rd Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair. Life Gordon attended Harrow School and graduated from Balliol College, Oxford, in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts, then with a Masters in 1968. He attained the rank of Major in the service of the 5th/7th Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders and fought in the Second World War. Sir Robert Iain Algernon Forbes-Leith, 2nd Baronet (27 December 1902 – 17 March 1973) was a Scottish landowner and soldier who served as Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. Early life Forbes-Leith was born Robert Iain Algernon Burn, on 27 December 1902, the youngest child of Sir Charles Burn, 1st Bt. and his wife the Hon. Ethel Louise Forbes-Leith, daughter of Alexander Forbes-Leith, 1st Baron Leith of Fyvie. When Forbes-Leith was aged 23 in 1925, his father changed his name from Burn to Forbes-Leith on the death of the 1st Baron Leith and the inheritance of his estates, including Fyvie Castle. Forbes-Leith was educated at Eton College followed by the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from which he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Royal Artillery. George Gordon, 2nd Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair (20 January 1879 – 6 January 1965), styled Lord Haddo until 1916 and Earl of Haddo from 1916 to 1934, was a Scottish peer and politician.
