Lora (Split)
Lora is a harbor in the northwestern part of Split, Croatia, in the Bay of Kaštela. It is currently used as a naval base of the Croatian Navy. Located right next to the Brodosplit shipyard, it has been an important naval base of Yugoslav Navy (1945–1991) and its headquarters. During the Croatian War of Independence, it was the site of the Lora prison camp. Ever since its founding in 1991, Lora naval base has served as the HQ of Croatian Navy. In this capacity, it is the home port for nearly all ships of the fleet. Lora is also the HQ of Croatian Coast Guard. Lora naval base hosts sport, educational and other naval facilities, as well as a naval memorial chapel dedicated to Croatian sailors who perished in Croatian War of Independence. Missile Boat
A missile boat or missile cutter is a small, fast warship armed with anti-ship missiles. Being smaller than other warships such as destroyers and frigates, missile boats are popular with nations interested in forming a navy at lower cost. They are similar in concept to the torpedo boats of World War II; in fact, the first missile boats were modified torpedo boats with the torpedo tubes replaced by missile tubes. P-01 Velebit
''Velebit'' (pennant number P-01) was a modified ''Una''-class midget submarine and the only submarine to see service with the Croatian Navy. It was built for the Yugoslav Navy during the 1980s where it was named ''Soča''. At the outbreak of the Croatian War of Independence ''Soča'' was being overhauled in the Brodogradilište specijalnih objekata division of Brodosplit shipyard in Split, Croatia. Although stripped of all equipment, it was preserved from the retreating Yugoslav forces by the shipyard workers. With modifications that were aimed at improving the ships endurance by including a diesel generator, it was launched as ''Velebit'' (P-01) in 1996. Since 2001, due to battery set malfunction, ''Velebit'' was no longer able to submerge, and was constrained to surface operations. Croatian Coast Guard
The Croatian Coast Guard ( hr, Obalna straža Republike Hrvatske) is a division of the Croatian Navy responsible for protecting the interests of the Republic of Croatia at sea. The Croatian Navy is composed of classical naval forces structured into a flotilla and the Coast Guard that solely consists of ships with peacetime duties, e.g. protection of ecology, fishing, control of tankers, ballast waters, combat against terrorism, trafficking of people, narcotics, and similar. Lora Prison Camp
The Lora prison camp was a prison camp in Split, Croatia. It was active from 1992 to 1997 with mainly Serbian residents of Split and prisoners of war being imprisoned throughout the Croatian War of Independence. The camp was the site of human rights abuses resulting in a controversial trial, acquittal, retrial and conviction of prison guards. At least 70 inmates were killed over the course of its existence. Background In 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence, Yugoslav Federal JNA forces were forced to withdraw from Split and the Lora naval compound was occupied by Croatian forces. The naval compound was converted to a prison camp in 1992 to house both civilians and prisoners of war. Croatian War Of Independence
The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991 to 1995 between Croat forces loyal to the Government of Croatia—which had declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY)—and the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and local Serb forces, with the JNA ending its combat operations in Croatia by 1992. Yugoslav Navy
The Yugoslav Navy ( sh-Cyrl-Latn, Југословенска ратна морнарица, Jugoslavenska ratna mornarica, Yugoslav War Navy), was the navy of Yugoslavia from 1945 to 1992. It was essentially a coastal defense force with the mission of preventing enemy landings along Yugoslavia's rugged 4,000-kilometer shoreline or coastal islands, and contesting an enemy blockade or control of the strategic Strait of Otranto. Brodosplit
Brodosplit is the largest shipyard in Croatia, located in the Supaval bay, on the north side of the Split peninsula. History The company was founded in 1922 by a merger of shipyards in the area and has been in its current location since 1932. With significant development in the latter half of the 20th century, it has grown into one of Croatia's largest shipyards. Croatian Missile Boat Šibenik
''Šibenik'' (pennant number RTOP-21) is a missile boat in service with the Croatian Navy. It was built for the Yugoslav Navy at the Kraljevica Shipyard in the 1970s as ''Vlado Ćetković'' (RTOP-402).Wertheim (2007), p. 145. Naval Base
A naval base, navy base, or military port is a military base, where warships and naval ships are docked when they have no mission at sea or need to restock. Ships may also undergo repairs.
