Acanthaceae is a family (the acanthus family) of dicotyledonous flowering plants containing almost 250 genera and about 2500 species. Most are tropical herbs, shrubs, or twining vines; some are epiphytes. Only a few species are distributed in temperate regions. The four main centres of distribution are Indonesia and Malaysia, Africa, Brazil, and Central America. Representatives of the family can be found in nearly every habitat, including dense or open forests, scrublands, wet fields and valleys, sea coast and marine areas, swamps, and mangrove forests. Johann Baptist Emanuel Pohl (23 February 1782, Česká Kamenice (german: Böhmisch Kamnitz) – 22 May 1834, Vienna) was an Austrian botanist, entomologist, geologist, mineralogist, and physician. Biography Johann Emanuel Pohl grew up in ''Politz an der Elbe'' (''Boletice nad Labem''− of northwestern Bohemia, in the present day Děčín District of the northern Czech Republic. He studied in Prague, and graduated as Doctor of Medicine in 1808. While he taught botany at the University he became librarian and curator of the collections of the Princess Kinsky. After a stint teaching at the University he worked in military hospitals in Náchod and Prague. In this period he published the ''Tentamen florae bohemicae'' of which only the first two volumes were published: ''Expositio generalis anatomica organi auditus per classes animalium'' and ''Systematischer Überblick der Reihenfolge der einfachen Fossilien''.
