Loomis Chaffee
The Loomis Chaffee School (; LC or Loomis) is a selective independent, coeducational, college preparatory school for boarding and day students in grades 9–12, including postgraduate students, located in Windsor, Connecticut, seven miles north of Hartford. Seventy percent of Loomis Chaffee's 726 students reside on the school's 300-acre campus and represent forty-four foreign countries and thirty-one U.S. states. 71% of Loomis Chaffee's student body are boarding students while 29% of Loomis Chaffee's student body are day students. Founded in 1914, Loomis Chaffee is a member of the Ten Schools Admissions Organization along with Choate, Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, St. Paul's, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Taft, and The Hill School. Postgraduate Year
A postgraduate (PG) year is an extra year of secondary coursework at a boarding school following high school graduation, but before entering college. It is a gap year option intended for students who either have not applied or were not admitted to college. At most schools, postgraduate students are integrated with the senior class, where they are able to participate in the same activities and sports, as well as living and eating arrangements, as the seniors. In the United States, most of the programs are in New England. They started around the 1960s and were sponsored by the U.S. military academies, who would accept students after the one-year program. Later programs were not all military-based, but followed the same theme of improving students' transcripts for college. Students also gained maturity and independence. John Mason Loomis
John Mason Loomis (January 5, 1825 – August 2, 1900) was a nineteenth-century American businessman and lumber tycoon from Chicago who was known for developing the city of Ludington, Michigan. He was involved with the Pere Marquette Lumber Company, which also operated salt distilleries that in turn influenced the salt industry of northern Michigan. The village of Pere Marquette benefited from these local industries and developed into the city Ludington. Loomis served as a colonel in the Illinois militia, mobilized as part of the Union Army during the American Civil War, held several commands, and fought in several major battles. He was recommended twice for promotion to brigadier general. Loomis was also active in Chicago real estate investments and charitable causes. Loomis Homestead
The Loomis Homestead in Windsor, Connecticut, is one of the oldest timber-frame houses in America. The oldest part of the house, an ell adjacent to the main house, is believed to have been built between 1640 and 1653 by Joseph Loomis who came to America from England in 1638. Later additions to the Loomis house were made around the turn of the eighteenth century. Taft School
The Taft School is a private, coeducational school located in Watertown, Connecticut, United States. It teaches students in 9th through 12th grades and post-graduates. About three-quarters of Taft's roughly 600 students live on the school's campus. The Taft School was founded in 1890 by Horace Dutton Taft, brother of President William Howard Taft.
