Longworth House Office Building
The Longworth House Office Building (LHOB) is one of five office buildings used by the United States House of Representatives. The building is located south of the Capitol, bounded by Independence Avenue, New Jersey Avenue, C Street S.E., and South Capitol Street, in southeast Washington. It has a floor area of and has a total of 251 congressional offices and suites, five large committee rooms, seven small committee rooms, and a large assembly room now used by the Ways and Means Committee. The building was named in 1962 in honor of the former Speaker of the House, Nicholas Longworth of Ohio. He served as Speaker from 1925 until Republicans lost their majority in 1931, the same year he died, and the same year the building was authorized. The House Beauty Shop Committee (officially known as the House Select Committee on the Beauty Shop) was a special committee of the United States House of Representatives which existed from 1967 to 1979. It was initially established pursuant to and introduced by Representative Martha Griffiths, a Democrat representing Michigan's 17th district. Griffiths, along with Edith Green (a Democrat from Oregon's 3rd district) and Catherine May (a Republican from Washington's 4th district), became the first members of the committee. It was formed to oversee and modernize the operations of the House Beauty Shop, a beauty salon located in the Cannon House Office Building in the United States Capitol. The United States Capitol, often called The Capitol or the Capitol Building, is the seat of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, which is formally known as the United States Congress. It is located on Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Richards Building
The Richards Building was the headquarters of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey from 1871 to 1929. It was located in Washington, D.C. on a block immediately south of the United States Capitol. It was demolished in 1929 to construct the Longworth House Office Building. Architecture The Building was designed by Adolf Cluss. It consisted of two connected units, a Main Building to the east facing New Jersey Avenue, and a Back Building facing South Capitol Street. The United States Public Health Service (USPHS or PHS) is a collection of agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services concerned with public health, containing nine out of the department's twelve operating divisions. The Assistant Secretary for Health oversees the PHS. The Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) is the federal uniformed service of the PHS, and is one of the eight uniformed services of the United States. Butler Building
The Butler Building was a mansion in Washington, D.C., constructed by Benjamin Franklin Butler. It served as the headquarters of the U.S. Marine Hospital Service, and its successor the Public Health Service, from 1891 until 1929. It also contained a purpose-built fire-proof unit to store archives of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. It was demolished in 1929 to construct the Longworth House Office Building. Architecture The building contained three units, one of which was specifically constructed to be a fire-proof storage space. David Lynn (architect)
David Lynn (November 10, 1873 – May 25, 1961) was an American architect and honorary member of the American Institute of Architects. He served as Architect of the Capitol from 1923 until 1954. Early years David Lynn was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. He was a 21-year veteran of the Architect of the Capitol's staff before being appointed Architect of the Capitol in 1923. His appointment was made by President Calvin Coolidge on August 22, 1923. Architect of the Capitol During Lynn's administration, four major buildings were added to the Capitol complex: the Longworth House Office Building, the Supreme Court Building, the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory and the annex to the Library of Congress now known as the John Adams Building.
