Long Xuyên
Long Xuyên () is the capital city of An Giang province, in the Mekong Delta region of south-western Vietnam. History In 1789, a group of explorers established a small outpost in the Tam Khe canal, naming it Dong Xuyen. Sooner after a marketplace was created and named Long Xuyen, but by the 1860s the area become more well known by the Long Xuyen market than the official outpost's name. From 1877, the reach of Long Xuyen grew as the city's administration become responsible for an increasing number of neighborhoods and wards. It would not be until 1999 would Long Xuyen be designated as a formal city. Geography It is located approximately 1,950 km south of Hanoi, 189 km from Ho Chi Minh City, and 45 km from the Cambodian border. The population of Long Xuyên city is over 368,376 (2013), with an area of approximately 106.87 km². Provincial city ( vi, Thành phố thuộc tỉnh), commonly known as City, a type of second tier subdivision of Vietnam is divided into 713 units along with urban district, district, municipal city, and town have equal status. Also by virtue of Decree No. 42/2009/ND-CP, city are officially classified into Class-1, Class-2 or Class-3. The cities can only subordinate to Province as the Second Tier unit. At the Third Tier, City is divided into wards and communes. Fact Cities are usually provincial urban and administrative centers. An Giang University
An Giang University (AGU) ( vi, Trường Đại học An Giang) is a Vietnamese public university based in the city of Long Xuyen in An Giang Province. With over 10,000 enrolled students annually, it is one of the major educational and research institutions in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. History In 1975, the school opened as a Teacher Training College. In 1999, it was re-established as the second university in the then-rural Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, with the purpose of serving the provinces of An Giang, Kiên Giang, and Đồng Tháp. Agriculturalist Dr. Võ Tòng Xuân was appointed as its first rector. With the rapid expansion of the school, news spread about the possible sale and privatization of the school, with school leadership denying the information as rumors in 2015. Basa Fish
Basa (''Pangasius bocourti'') is a species of catfish in the family Pangasiidae. Basa are native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins in Mainland Southeast Asia. These fish are important food fish with an international market. They are often labelled in North America and Australia as "basa fish", "swai", or "bocourti". A commune (xã) is a type of third tier subdivision of Vietnam. It is divided into 11,162 units along with wards and townships, which have an equal status. Communes have a lower status than provincial cities, towns or districts. Facts Certain small villages are not officially regarded as administrative communes.
