Bleaker Island
Bleaker Island ( es, link=no, Isla Maria) is one of the Falkland Islands, lying off south east Lafonia (the southern peninsula of East Falkland). The name is a corruption of "Breaker Island" due to the waves that break on it. It was also known as "Long Island" at one point. Geography Bleaker Island is long, narrow and low-lying and the southern tip of the Island is separated from Lafonia by a thin stretch of water named 'The Jump'. It has an area of and is long. The island is no wider than at any point and tapers to several thin necks of land at various points down its length. The highest point is Semaphore Hill, at . The western shores of Bleaker Island are low-lying and fringed by shallow stone beaches. The Falkland Islands (; es, Islas Malvinas, link=no ) is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. Time In The Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands has officially used Falkland Islands Standard Time ( UTC−3) all year round since 5 September 2010. However, many residents of Camp use UTC−4, known on the Falklands as "Camp Time" (as opposed to "Stanley time" or "Government clocks"). The Falklands used Stanley Mean Time (UTC−3:51:24) until 11 March 1912 when Falkland Islands Time (FKT, UTC−4) came into effect. FKT was then used all year round until 25 September 1983 when Falkland Islands Summer Time (FKST, UTC−3) was first introduced for the summer period of the year. Berkeley Sound
Berkeley Sound is an inlet, or fjord in the north east of East Falkland in the Falkland Islands. The inlet was the site of the first attempts at colonisation of the islands, at Port Louis, by the French. Berkeley Sound has several smaller bays within it – Uranie Bay, Port Louis harbour and Johnson's Harbour bay, separated by Grave Point, and includes islands such as Hog Island, Kidney Island (a nature reserve) and Long Island. It was enlarged as the result of glacial action. Berkeley Sound was visited by Charles Darwin during his round-the-world voyage on HMS ''Beagle'' in 1834. He found it an "undulating land, with a desolate and wretched aspect". Port Louis, Falkland Islands
Port Louis is a settlement on northeastern East Falkland. It was established by Louis de Bougainville on 5 April 1764 as the first French settlement on the islands, but was then transferred to Spain in 1767 and renamed ''Puerto Soledad'' (In Spanish, East Falkland is known as ''Isla Soledad''). History The settlement has seen several name changes. The original French settlers named the settlement Port Saint Louis, which was changed to Puerto Soledad after capture by Spain. Vernet reverted to a Spanish version of the original name when he formed his settlement, Puerto Luis. The British renamed the settlement Anson's Harbour for a while before reverting once more to the original French name, Port Louis. Louis Vernet
Luis Vernet (born Louis Vernet; March 6, 1791 – January 17, 1871) was a merchant from Hamburg of Huguenot descent. Vernet established a settlement on East Falkland in 1828, after first seeking approval from both the British and Argentine authorities. As such, Vernet is a controversial figure in the history of the Falkland Islands sovereignty dispute. Biography Vernet was born in Hamburg but later claimed a French birthplace in his effort to have the French Government intercede with the British Government on his behalf. As a result, some sources refer to him a native of Hamburg, while others refer to him as French born. Antonio Rivero
Antonio "El Gaucho" Rivero was a gaucho known for his leading role in the Port Louis Murders of 26 August 1833, in which five prominent members of the settlement of Port Louis on the Falkland Islands were murdered. In Argentine revisionist historiography and public consciousness, Rivero is viewed as a patriotic hero who rebelled against British authority. However, academic historians both in Argentina and abroad agree that Rivero's actions were not motivated by patriotism, but by disputes over pay and working conditions with the representatives of Louis Vernet, the former Argentine Political and Military Commander of the islands.
